ABOUT   JULES   VERNE    

(It  is a  French  name—this  is  the  Correct  spelling !)

 

Jules Verne  was  born  in  France  in  1828.

He  wrote  in  French.  His  books  became  very  famous  and  popular.

The  books  were translated  into  many  languages,   and  printed  in  many  countries  al  around  the  world.

 

His  Adventures  books,  Like  "Around  the  world  in  80  days"  describe  trips  in  many  countries.    He  himself  traveled  few  times  in  Europe,  and  once  in  America.      He  could  describe  well  India,  China   or  Japan   only  because  he  read  many  books  about  them.

 

In  his  Science-Fiction   books   he  imagined  things  that  did  not  exist  in  his  time.

----In  "20  thousand  miles  under  the  seas"  he  described  a  submarine  that  had  electric  motor  and  could  go  under  the  oceans. 

----In   "From  earth  to  the  moon"    he  tells  about  people  traveling  to  the  moon  and   back  in a  rocket.  

----In  other  books  he  wrote  about  airplanes  and  helicopters.

 

All   these  things  really  happened 50  or  100  years  later,  but  he  wrote  about  them  from  his  imagination !

 

ABOUT   "AROUND   THE   WORLD  IN  80  DAYS"

 

This  book   was  written  in  1872,  and  it  is  Jules  Verne  most  famous  book.       The  idea  for  the  story  came   to  Jules Verne  when  he  heard  about  an  American,  George Francis Train, who  made  a  similar  trip  in  1870.

 

Such  a trip  was  really  possible  in  that  time.   There were  already  trains,  ships  crossing  the  oceans,  and  Indians  were  still  attacking  trains  in  America……..

 

In  1889,  an  American  woman  by  the  name  of  Nellie  Bly  tried  to  beat  Fog's  record  (which  was really  79  days !).    She  left  from  New-York  to  London,  and  followed  Fog's  route  back  to  New-York.  She  made  it  in  only  72  days  and  became  an America  hero.

George  Train  and  Nellie  Bly  were  both  activists   in  the  women  suffrage  (the  right  to  vote )  movement. 

 

Joules   Verne   died   on  Mar  24,  1905.

 

In  few  months   it  will  be  exactly  100  years  to  his  death.  All  his  lovers   and  admirers  around  the  world  will  remember  him  than,  and  there  will  be  special   meetings   to  talk  about  him  and  his  books.
