Race and multiculturalism play a prominant role in Kerouac's writings. Aside from the prominant influence of Eastern religion in his works, particularly Dharma Bums, numerous references are made throughout his work to the influence of Black culture on himself personally, and the Beat Generation as a whole. The Subterrianians is perhaps the most visiable example of Kerouac's struggle with race... while his work has been accused of essentializing other races, and attempting to assimilate them into American culture, his writing is nothing if not honest, and often time a breathtaking depiction of his perception of other culture |
