NU MU CHAPTER HISTORY

The undergraduate torch of Alpha Kappa Alpha had existed for many years in the Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Long Island areas. It was now time for the flame to illuminate Queens County. Under the sponsorship of Epsilon Pi Omega Chapter and their Basileus, Soror Gloria Black, Nu Mu Chapter was chartered on June 2, 1980 at City University of New York, Queens College.

Basea Ku Afrea, "Sisterhood Everlasting" was the name of Nu Mu’s founding line. Fourteen young ladies were members of that charter line. They were: Normine Allen, Gloria Benford, Miriam Burnette, Laura Collins Judith Denbow, Susie Faulkner, Carolee Foreman, Edith Gonsalves, Camilla A. Holmes, Lauraine Hurse, Barbara Johnson, Gloria Moore, Christine Tucker, and Maria Foreman.

In the spirit of Alpha Kappa Alpha’s service to all mankind, Nu Mu Chapter has participated in a myriad of service projects:

As a result of its dedicated service and hard work while maintaining the requisite grad point average, Nu Mu chapter was the 1993 North Atlantic Region Undergraduate Chapter of the Year Award, Second Place.

Through many fund-raising projects, bake sales, talent shows, fashion shows, raffles, parties, etc., Nu Mu has been able to distribute thousands of dollars in charity donations and scholarships.

High scholastic achievement is one of Alpha Kappa Alpha’s main goals. Nu Mu continuously preservers to meet that goal. In 1981 Nu Mu won the Undergraduate Achievement Award for the chapter with highest G.P.A in the North Atlantic Region. In 1993 Soror Nicola Sutherland was an EAF Scholarship Recipient and in 1994 she was a Leadership Fellow. Soror Ianthe Dunn was bestowed with the honor of Miss AKA 1995, which is the most outstanding undergraduate Soror the North Atlantic Region.

Traditionally, Alpha Kappa Alpha members are some of the nation best educators. However, this chapter has proved that it excels in all professional fields. Nu Mu alumnae are doctors, lawyers, accountants, businesswoman, and clergy as well as educators.
