The History of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

 

Alpha Kappa Alpha became America’s first Black Greek lettered organization founded by and for black women. Her roots date back to January 15, 1908 at Howard University, in Washington, D.C. Ethel Hedgeman Lyle of ST. Louis, Missouri conceived the idea behind formation. She viewed the sorority as an instrument for enriching the social and intellectual aspects of college through mental stimulation and through interactions with friends and associates.

 

Throughout its 93 years of existence, Alpha Kappa Alpha’s purpose has become more complex. It was incorporated on January 29, 1913, to perpetuate the lifelong traditions and rituals of sisterhood. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. has branched out to be the channel through which selected college women improved the social and economic conditions in their city, state, nation, and world. Alpha Kappa Alpha has expanded to include more than 160,000 women in over 960 chapters through out the United States and other parts of the world.

 

The purpose of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. is to cultivate and encourage high scholastic and ethical standards , to promote unity and friendship among college women, to study and help alleviate problems concerning girls and women in order to improve their social stature, to maintain a progressive interest in college life , and to be of service to all mankind.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. addresses the major concerns of our community through the International Five Targets:

Education
Health
The Black Family
Economics
Arts

"ON-TRACK" is the Signature Program for Alpha Kappa Alpha's current administration."ON-TRACK" the acronym for Organizing, Nurturing, Team Building,Respecting, Achieving, Character Building and Knowledge.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. is a wonderful sisterhood committed to community service. Solving the problems of our community and helping those who are in need is a very serious matter. That is why we always always give our all to everything that we are involved in.
