George Wilson Younce was born Feb. 22, 1930 near Lenoir,NC. He got his first taste of singing gospel music as a teenager for a local quartet called the Spiritualaires I believe. He started out as a lead singer until his voice changed to the deep, smooth bass that is so recognizable today. He came to love gospel music by listening to the Blue Ridge Quartet as a teen. He later sang for them. Later he would have stints with the Weatherfords, The Florida Boys and a couple of others before being asked by Rex Humbard to join his Cathedral Trio and make them a quartet. Later they struck out on their own as a full time quartet and became what I regard as the best quartet of all time. And I regard George Younce as the greatest bass singer that ever stepped up onto a gospel music stage. Some of his most loved songs are, "Led Out Of Bondage", "This Old House", "Thanks To Calvary", "Cleanse Me", (a song he did as a duet with Glen Payne), "The Plan Of Salvation", and many others. George Younce is the father-in-law to Ernie Haase who sang tenor for the last nine years of the quartet's existence. He has his own group now called Signature Sound Quartet. George Younce passed away April 11, of 2005.
