Dear Mr. McCourt,
My name is Jisoo
Kim and I live in Port Washington, Long
Island. I am currently a junior in Paul
D. Schreiber High
School and I just finished reading your memoir, Angela’s Ashes.
I was really astonished by your
autobiography and how you survived all the poverty and hardships. As I read
through the book, I felt myself swept into the streets of Limerick
and I felt as if I will meet the child Frank at any moment. As you described
how your family had pig’s head for Christmas dinner and gathered coals to warm
your house, I my mouth would drop open at the vivid imagery of extreme poverty
that had infected your childhood. How did you never lose your hope of going to America
even during those desperate times? Did
you ever meet your father again? I hope your life in America
will continue to be a success and no member of your family or friends ever
suffers from poverty again.
I would like to thank you for
taking time reading this letter, and I would really appreciate it if you
respond to my message.
Sincerely,
Jisoo Kim
