The Educational Foundation committee invites you, your family and friends to the Branch Year-End Dinner meeting Thursday, May 27. Relax, get out of the kitchen, and enjoy a special evening as we showcase and honor our Named Gift Honorees. We will be honoring five area women who have labored long in the field of health and wellness. Our honorees are Ann Barton (York County Adult Day Services), Carolyn Carpenter (retired Vice President for Community and Government Relations at Piedmont Health Care System), Debbie Hayworth (branch director of the YMCA Wellness Center), Jill Simpson (nurse at the Teen Health Center in Rock Hill), and Jennifer G. Vickery (District Director for Health Education of South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control).
The buffet dinner will begin at 6:45 pm at Chandler Place, 745 Dilworth Lane, off India Hook Road. The program will begin at 7:30 pm. Please send your check made payable to Rock Hill AAUW for $15.00 per person to: Mary McBean, treasurer, 2335 Sparrow Drive, Rock Hill, SC 29732 by Monday, May 17. If you tell us you are coming and do not show, you will be billed since we are committed to the caterer.

April Program: Showing the Value of the Legal Advocacy Fund - On April 22 Susan Fitzgerald Bruce, AAUW-SC Legal Advocacy Fund Liaison will presented "Showing the Value of LAF", updating information on LAF plaintiffs, cases, and settlements, and focusing on LAF's connection with members and the community. LAF provides funding and a support system for women challenging sex discrimination in higher education.
FEBRUARY 2004: No Room for Racism: A Multicultural Approach to Heightening Awareness and Understanding of Our Community's Diverse Population. On February 26 we had planned to welcome Diane Wells, Project Specialist for the Rock Hill Police Department and Staff Liaison for the No Room for Racism Program. Diane was to share with us the history of the program, the Mayor's objectives, the activities of the group, and ways in which we may become informed and involved in this very valuable endeavor. Unfortunately a massive snowstorm forced us to cancel this program for this year.
JANUARY 2004: Meals and Muscles: Making it Personal - Danne Kasparek and Lauren Brightwell discussed how we can make lifestyle changes and battle the holiday season bulge. Nutrition and exercise were emphasized. The program was held at the Pope John Center on January 22.
DECEMBER 2003: Annual Holiday Evening: A buffet dinner followed by a silent auction and a loud auction. Funds are raised for the AAUW Educational Foundation.
OCTOBER 2003: A public forum - The Patriot Act: Our Rights vs. Our Safety - was held in Barnes Recital Hall, Winthrop University and was co-sponsored by the Political Science Honor Society on October 29. Mr. Scott Schools, Asst. US Attorney for South Carolina and Ms. Denyse Williams, Executive Director of the American Civil Liberties Union of South Carolina were the featured speakers.
SEPTEMBER 2003: THE PUBLIC FACE OF CANCER:
Featured speakers were Karen Kedrowski, Associate Professor and Chair
of the Winthrop Political Science Department and Marilyn Stine Sarow, Associate
Professor of Mass Communication at Winthrop.
They presented one portion of their book entitled The Public Face
of Cancer.
