France condemns attack on civilians in Southern Sudan
Press Statement
French Ministry of Foreign Affairs
February 22, 2002
Last Wednesday in Sudan, a Sudanese army helicopter fired several rockets on a group of civilians who were collecting food aid that had been dropped a few days earlier by aircraft from the World Food Program.
We condemn this attack on civilians which killed about 15 people and wounded several others.
The Sudanese ambassador to Paris will be summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs today and asked to explain this serious incident which is liable to affect French-Sudanese relations.
It goes without saying that Sudan's entry into the priority solidarity area (ZSP) makes us particularly vigilant, and we shall make sure that our principles are respected, especially regarding human rights.
