Mayuko is a Japanese girl in her late teens. She is a good-natured girl who is instantly likable, but she is so riddled with insecurity and self-doubt that she is almost entirely oblivious to her own good qualities. She comes from a poor rural family, lost her father at an early age, and has to work three jobs to pay tuition, to have enough to eat, and to keep a roof over her head. Stress, insecurity, and an ever-growing sense of isolation—spawned by her insecurities, as she is likable enough that Chiaki and Genzo want to be her friends--eventually threatens to drive her into a deep depression, but she finds inner strength through the example of Kotomi, her landlady, and through concern over her wild, motor-mouthed “roommate” NieA… whom Mayuko didn’t realize she cares deeply for until NieA vanishes under mysterious circumstances.

NieA is a scrawny alien girl who has come to live in Mayuko’s closet under unrevealed circumstances. She is almost always hungry and is constantly trying to get Mayuko (and anyone else who will listen) to give her free food, and will often eat any extra edibles that Mayuko might leave in her small fridge or even try to hide elsewhere in her room. NieA is a misfit wherever she goes, being from the very bottom of the alien caste structure, and being too weird and abrasive to fit in among humans. She doesn’t seem terribly bothered by either fact, at least not on the surface. However, she has been known to take revenge on those who truly hurt her feelings by playing vicious pranks on them.
Readers may note that NieA doesn’t possess the Own Big Mecha or the Personal Gear attributes, even though she is shown with at least two small UFOs in the course of the series. This is because her creations don’t seem to survive longer than a few seconds once they take flight.
