Over the years, Lita's training to become a cleric and wizard like her
Aunt was centered around her love of learning secrets and discovering ancient
mysteries.
She would finish her duties as caretaker in the morning and spend her
afternoons studying.
One day in the frozen season of winter, a traveling cleric showed up
at the temple seeking someone who could aid him in studying some magical
rune
structures in some ruins several days travel from the town where the
temple was located, recently uncovered by a small earthquake. Lita volunteered,
and her
Aunt gave her permission to go.
The trek was rough, but finally the two clerics arrived at the site. The old cleric uncovered an opening that led into the ruins and bade Lita to follow.
Once inside, Lita lit a sunrod she had brought from the temple, but
what it revealed was not runes, but an pair of skeletons dressed in battered
armour, wielding
swords. They attacked.
Dodging the thrust of the first skeleton, Lita raised her holy symbol
and prayed to her god for the power to repel the skeletons, but something
blocked her
attempt. The old cleric was nowhere to be seen. Figuring that she had
been betrayed, Lita thought of fleeing the ruins, but she banished the
thought. She would
get to the bottom of this mystery.
Backing away from the skeletons, Lita invoked a spell to deflect the
swords of her enemies. Moving again, away from the attacking undead, she
prepared a
spell that would destroy the negative energy of a skeleton. The apparent
guardians of the ruins attacked again, but this time Lita counter-attacked,
grabbing
hold of monster’s bony wrist. The magic flowed out of her into the
animation and the skeleton crumbled.
The remaining skeleton attacked again, but this time Lita countered
its rusty blade with one end of her staff and then dealt a blow with the
other end to the
skeletons head, knocking it off and ending its assault.
After regaining her breath, the young cleric ventured through the doorway
the two skeletons had been guarding. Going down a hallway, she reached
a broken
door brought her sunrod up to see what was inside. Upon the far wall
there was a molding shelf with several dusty volumes still intact after
some centuries.
Lita picked one book off the shelf and opened it. The writing resembled
a language she had seen before, but not being able to place it, Lita decided
she would
take the books back to the temple to study them. After leaving the
room, Lita moved carefully down the hallway, only to discover that it had
caved in. There was
nothing left to explore.
That night in camp, the young cleric caught the sound of leaves rustling.
Looking over to what had made the disturbance, she found, to her surprise,
the old
man.
Incensed at being left alone to fight the guardians of the ruins, Lita
demanded an explanation. The man explained that it had been a test to see
if she were
willing to commit to her goals. Lita's Aunt had suggested that Lita
was a prime candidate to become a Church Investigator of the Art, a sect
of which the old
cleric was a prominent member.
By the time they had arrived back at the Temple, Lita had decided that
she would attempt to fill the role she had been chosen for. If she found
out later that it
was not her calling, there would be no ill will towards her.
The old cleric arranged for them supplies to make the journey back to
his home in a city some distance away, where Lita would receive additional
training
before her quest began.
Life had just become much more interesting.
