Kevis is honored by scholars, instructors, students, and bards. A number of wizards and alchemists also honor him, at least on his High Holy Day (the longest day of the year). Shrines to the god are found in schools and libraries throughout the Empire of Elaan and those neighboring realms where the god is also honored. Clerics of the god are close friends and associates of wizards, alchemists, and adventurers or anyone who may uncover new knowledge about magic and science or who may uncover lore and historical knowledge lost or obscured by war and disaster. Noblemen and wealthy merchants of the empire also keep good relations with the church of Kevis, as its clerics are the primary recorders of history, and these people want to be remembered kindly. The church also maintains the realm's finest schools and libraries, with even the smallest shrine of Kevis housing at least one or two scrolls containing lore, scientific fact, or a spell.
Many clerics of Kevis are multiclassed as bards or wizards.
History: Kevis's is a relatively old faith in the Empire of Elaan, but it is only within the past three hundred years that it has risen from an obscure cult of scholars to one of the world's major religions. Eroth I, the first emperor, evoked the god's name when he seized the throne from Plinath the Mad, who had sought to destroy all written works and all spellcasters in the world. Eroth I swore that never again would a madman and his evil minions threaten the accumulated knowledge of the civilization. Since then, the church has kept careful records about every aspect of the empire's history and has strove to document all magical and mundane knowledge.
Relations: Kevis and his church are friendly with most other powers worshiped within the Empire as well as the organizations devoted to them. The two exceptions are Fahlarene, goddess of nature and wilderness, revered primarily by druids and lycanthropes, and Morgett, god of darkness and secrets, a god worshiped primarily in the lands of the Lichlords, but also revered by dark and evil beings plotting the destruction of Elaan. Both of these gods and their followers are opposed to Kevis' teachings, mostly because they disagree with the notion that mortals are meant to understands and explore all of creation. Followers of Fahlarene and followers of Kevis have fought brutal battles in the empire's Hinterlands, and both sides have destroyed sites that are holy or important to the other.
Dogma: The main belief of the worshipers of Kevis is that their god wants all mortals to be as educated and aware as possible of the facts of the world they live in; education equals liberty from superstition and may even lead to better health and greater happiness all around. Clerics of Kevis teach that there should never be such a thing as "forbidden knowledge" or texts of information that is inherently evil. Information and knowledge are, in fact, always good. It is what beings do with the knowledge that is evil. In fact, to followers of Kevis, keeping knowledge secret is a crime nearly equal to murder.
