The Crew of the Cha Cha Maru

In the far future, humanity has colonized many star systems across the galaxy. On the gas giant of Ietta settlers live on artificial islands that float on the turbulent "sea" thanks to anti-gravity technology. No plants or metals exist on the world, so virtually every native device is constructed of some form of plastic.
The locals do a booming business in capturing the unique lifeforms that live in the "Sea of Clouds" and selling them to zoos throughout space. The most successful are part of the Pet Shop Hunters (PSH) conglomerate. One of the ships that stands out as the most remarkable among these is the Cha Cha Maru, a vessel whose crew is renowned for fulfilling even the most difficult contracts… and this despite the fact they are led by a girl who is barely 17 years old! (For more information on these characters and their world, check out the graphic novel and the animated feature "Plastic Little." (Use the links to the right to get more info on these items.)
The crew of the Cha Cha Maru were created using the Star Wars Roleplaying Game, although some of the original material on this site has been incorporated into some of the write-ups.

Background and Personality Notes: Tita grew up on the PSH docks at the Sea of Clouds, watching her father come and go on the Cha Cha Maru. She displayed a curious ability to foretell coming storms that even the weather prediction systems missed, and it was evident to all that she would some day take to the Sea of Clouds.
The day came much sooner than anyone had expected or even wanted. Tita’s father was killed during a freak weather occurrence at sea before she had even finished her primary education. While the Cha Cha Maru was being maintained and repaired by surviving members of her father’s crew, Tita rushed to finish her schooling. She had barely received her PSH officer certification and pilot permit before she presented herself on the docks to take command of her father’s ship.
Tita is determined to prove herself a worthy successor to her father. Although she is learning on the job, her unyielding spirit and sound judgement is proof that some day she will be among the best captains of the PSH fleet. The loyalty and support of her crew are both well deserved and something that helps her through tough times.
Tita is 17 years old. She has brown hair, brown eyes, and olive skin that tans easily.

Balboa, Male Human Soldier 8/Scout 2: Init +2 (Dex bonus); Defense 18 (+6 class, +2 Dex); Spd 10m; VP/WP 50/12; Atk +11/+6/+1 melee (1d3+2 punch, or by weapon), +11/+6/+1 ranged (by weapon); SQ Trailblazing; Fort +9, Ref +6, Will +5; SZ M (1.85m); FP 8; DSP 1; Rep 5; Str 14, Dex 15, Con 12, Int 12, Wis 12, Cha 13.

Background and Personality Notes: Balboa joined the Iettan armed forces at age 16 and by 17 he had already received a field promotion to officer. He soon became attached to a covert unit devoted to hunting down and assassinating major crime figures. Growing tired of killing, Balboa took the opportunity of a failed mission to allow the military to believe him dead. He started a new life onboard the Cha Cha Maru.
Balboa served on the Cha Cha Maru under Tita’s father and he is currently her first officer. He is the one among the crew who has the widest range of life experiences and is often considered the "brains" of the operation by the rest. Although serious minded and dedicated to his duty and the safety of the ship and crew, he projects an easy-going attitude and is always quick with a smile and a word of reassurance for his young captain. However, he becomes an almost entirely different person if he perceives a threat to his new life or any of the people in it… he reverts to the cold, calculating killer he was earlier in life and terminates the threat with extreme prejudice.
Balboa is 32 years old. His hair is sandy blonde and his skin is deeply tanned.

Ship’s Doctor Mei Lin Jones, Female Human, Expert 12/Scout 1: Init +0; Defense 15 (+5 class); Spd 10m; VP/WP 6/15; Atk +10/+5 melee (1d6+1 punch), +9/+4 ranged (by weapon); Fort +7, Ref +5, Will +9; SZ M (1.8m); FP 3; DSP 0; Rep 6; Str 13, Dex 11, Con 15, Int 18, Wis 16, Cha 10.

Feats: Expertise, Fame*, Martial Artist, Power Attack, Sharp-eyed, Skill Emphasis (Survival), Weapon Group Proficiency (simple weapons, blaster pistols, blaster rifles)
Background and Personality Notes: Mei Lin Jones was a child prodigy who sped through medical school and discovered a cure for the deadly Iettan flu before her 16th birthday, gaining fame under the name of "The Angel of Ietta." She had been so driven by her own intellect and her parents’ encouragement that she hadn’t ever developed any real people skills, and it wasn’t until she saved the life of a young Tita that she really discovered the true meaning of being a practitioner of medicine. When Tita’s father died a few years later, Mei’s parents took the young girl in and they became like sisters.
As Tita grew closer to her adoptive parents, Mei Lin grew more distant from them. She hadn’t realized that she had missed out on virtually all joys of childhood until she got to know Tita. This realization was followed by a growing sense of resentment toward her parents.
Mei Lin is one of the greatest medical minds and scholars on Ietta, as well as being a leading expert in Chinese martial arts and a range of philosophical schools of thought. She could be one of the world’s most famous and wealthiest citizens, but when Tita took command of the Cha Cha Maru, Mei Lin joined the ship’s crew to be with her friend. Mei Lin continues to struggle in her relationship with her parents, but Tita is working hard at bringing her adoptive family closer to one another.
Mei Lin is 26 years old. Her facial features appear somewhat exotic, as she is half-Asian, half-Caucasian. Her hair is sandy brown, and her eyes are brown. She is fair-skinned.

Nichol Hawking, Male Human, Scoundrel 2/Scout 2: Init +8 (Improved Initiative, +4 Dex); Defense 21 (+7 class. +4 Dex); Spd 10m; VP/WP 18/10; Atk +1 melee (1d3-1, punch), +2 ranged (by weapon); SQ Better Lucky Than Good, Illicit Barter; Fort +2, Ref +5, Will +2; SZ M (1.64m); FP 1; DSP 0; Rep 1; Str 11, Dex 18, Con 10, Int 14, Wis 10, Cha 12.
Equipment: Thin suit, PSH uniform, PSH pilot’s rank insignia
Skills: Climb +2, Computer Use +7, Gather Information +5, Jump +2, Knowledge (Ietta racing circuit) +7, Pilot +11, Profession (Ietta racing navigator) +5, Profession (PSH pilot) +3, Repair +5, Search +5, Spot +7, Survival +3, Tumble +5.
Feats: Improved Initiative, Lightning Reflexes, Quickness, Weapon Group Proficiency (simple weapons, blaster pistols)
Background and Personality Notes: The only child of a husband-and-wife racing team, Nichol Hawking showed an affinity for speed and piloting early in life. When his parents were killed during the deadly annual Window 32 Race, he vowed that he would some day win that race in their name. He was taken in by his uncle, who was also a professional racer, and served for a few years as his navigator in races, honing his skill and talent. Eventually, he struck out on his own. Lacking funding and unwilling to expose others to the dangers inherent in racing, Nichol toured the circuit in substandard vehicles and without a navigator. Nonetheless, he consistently finished second or third in most races and even ranked in the top five of the Window 32 several years in a row. Eventually, he had to take a job to support his racing activities, and this brought him to the Cha Cha Maru in the role of pilot and navigator.
Within hours of first meeting Captain Tita Mu Koshigaya, Nichol’s attachment to the PSH ship was on the way to becoming far more than just a way to support his racing activities. He developed a crush on the energetic young captain almost immediately, and it soon deepened to true love. He tries to keep his feelings to himself, but they are obvious to every other crewmember except Tita… and this brings no end of teasing from Balboa and Roger Rogers.
Nichol is a naïve romantic who believes firmly that there is inherent goodness in all living beings. He is shy and often awkward around others, but few are his equal when he is behind the controls of a vehicle of vessel.
Nichol is 19 years old. He has strawberry blonde hair and pale skin.

Chief Engineer Mikail DeAgleff, Male Human Scout 10: Init +0; Defense 17 (+6 class, +1 Dex); Spd 10m; VP/WP 53/14; Atk +10/+5 melee (1d3+3 punch), +8/+3 ranged (by weapon); SQ Trailblazing, Uncanny Dodge (Dex bonus to Def, can’t be flanked), Skill Mastery (Disable Device), Skill Mastery (Repair); Fort +7, Ref +6, Will +7; SZ M (1.7m); FP 8; DSP 0; Rep 2; Str 16, Dex 12, Con 14, Int 14, Wis 15, Cha 12.
Equipment: Thin suit, PSH uniform, PSH chief engineer’s rank insignia
Skills: Climb +12, Computer Use +16, Craft (engine components) +9, Demolitions +9, Disable Device +9, Jump +9, Knowledge (cloud ship engine design) +11, Knowledge (cloud ship types) +10, Listen +11, Profession (ship’s engineer) +10, Repair +22, Search +10, Spot +9, Survival +12.
Feats: Endurance, Gearhead, Skill Emphasis (Repair), Skill Emphasis (Survival), Weapon Group Proficiency (blaster pistols, blaster rifles, simple weapons)
Background and Personality Notes: Chief Engineer Mikail DeAgleff has served on the Cha Cha Maru since before Tita’s father was its captain. He knows the ship better than he knows himself and he is able to keep the ship running under circumstances where lesser engineers would be crying "Abandon ship!" He feels very protective toward the other members of the crew, although he won’t always admit to this. He is not ashamed of showing affection toward Tita, however. He has known her since she was a baby, and he feels very fatherly toward her. In addition, her father asked that he protect her, and Mikail would rather lose his own life than betray a vow he made to a dying friend.
Mikail is the very image of the gruff, short-tempered sea dog. Only Tita and his own daughter ever get to see his soft side.
Mikail is 45 years old. He is stout of build and heavily muscled. His hair and beard are steel gray, and he is going bald.

Assistant Engineer Roger Rogers, Male Human, Scoundrel 5: Init +2 (+2 Dex); Defense 18 (+2 Dex, +6 class); Spd 10m; VP/WP 22/10; Atk +4 melee (1d3+1, punch), +5 ranged (by weapon); SQ Better Lucky Than Good, Illicit Barter, Sneak Attack +2d6; Fort +1, Ref +4, Will -1; SZ M (1.8m); FP 4; DSP 0; Rep 1; Str 12, Dex 14, Con 10, Int 12, Wis 6, Cha 10.
Equipment: Thin suit, PSH uniform, PSH assistant engineer’s rank insignia
Skills: Bluff +7, Climb +2, Computer Use +7, Demolitions +7, Disable Device +7, Escape Artist +6, Forgery +8, Gather Information +4, Hide +10, Knowledge (cloud ship engine design) +4, Knowledge (cloud ship types) +4, Listen +4, Move Silently +10, Profession (ship’s engineer) +2, Repair +8
Feats: Low Profile, Skill Emphasis (Forgery), Skill Emphasis (Repair), Stealthy, Weapon Group Proficiency (blaster pistols, simple weapons)
Background and Personality Notes: Roger Rogers is the ship’s roguish engineer. Little is known of his background and Roger always changes the subject when it comes up. His PSH credentials, however, are spotless and he came with recommendations from respected captains in the fleet.
Friendly, energetic, and a hard worker, he is nonetheless a source of trouble onboard. He mercilessly teases Nichol and often lures him to take part in one of his favorite activities: Peeking at Tita or Mei Lin while they bathe.
Roger Rogers is 22 years old. He has black hair, brown eyes, and dusky skin.
