Ross Sylibus is a tall, large-framed man, very physically fit and active. He is not a Mars native, arriving at the beginning of the film from Earth, where he was a police detective. After Ross’ partner, Jessica, was killed by a cyborg criminal they were chasing, Ross found himself haunted by her death, seeing her final moments again and again in dreams that made a good night’s sleep a rare thing. Hoping to escape the horrible nightmares that plagued him and get a fresh start somewhere new, Ross transferred from the Chicago police to Mars, but even being a planet away did little to help him escape the awful dreams.
The death of his partner at the hands of a cyborg changed Ross, from a man who ignored robots for the most part to one who saw them as possible threats. This is especially true of those who can hide among human beings, such as the Assassinroids and the Thirds, but Ross is not really a hateful man. When the murders of the Thirds begin, he tries to pretend that the dead women were simply robots and not worthy of concern, but is unable to fool himself long and quickly realizes that their death affects him just as much as the death of a human would. As much as he wants to hate all robots for what the cyborg did to Jessica, he can’t fully do it, and that small bit of remaining compassion acts as the doorway for his love for Armitage to develop and escape.
Ross is well-trained and very experienced as a police officer, and is also familiar with the use of many types of weapons. He quickly learns to use Asakura’s battle-suit well, and fights the attacking military as a team with Armitage, the two working together to destroy the attackers quickly and efficiently and protect each other as well. The added strength his cybernetic limbs have is also helpful in combat, though Ross relies on his skill more than brute strength. As a large man, Ross is slightly slower than most officers, though not by much.
A stoic man, Ross rarely reveals what he is feeling or discusses his feelings with anyone but his closest friends. His expression is generally one of slight anger or irritation, which can be disconcerting and threatening to those who don’t know him. Ross is a sympathetic and sensitive man, however, and is nowhere near as unfriendly as he appears to be. Those he decides are his enemies, however, receive the full brunt of his anger and rarely enjoy the experience. He prefers not to kill unless he has to, however, and even prevents Armitage from killing Rene D’Anclaude when he reminds her that she is a police officer.
