Personal Items
The following two items of personal gear from the Armitage III animated
features are new to the BESM system. Most other new equipment featured
in the setting are either robots or mecha of various types. While robots
without their own personalities could be ruled to be major or minor personal
items (depending on the abilities of the robot), they are dealt with on
their own pages. As a cyberpunk setting in a not-too-distant future, every
modern-day piece of equipment featured in the BESM rulebooks or
elsewhere at this site should be available to characters.
Navi
The Navi is the all-purpose tool of the world of Armitage III. It
comes in a variety of sizes, from hand-held and portable to large home
versions, and a number of different designs, from fold-ups like Ross and
Armitage use, to laptop versions like Julian’s. The most basic function
of a Navi is as identification--a person’s Navi stores all of their vital
information, and is what people check when they request ID. In addition,
they are also used as communication devices, replacing telephones. Some,
like those the MPD use, provide both video and audio communication between
people, though they can also be set to transmit audio only if desired.
Navi are also useful computing tools, with a number of capabilities
that vary from model to model. Julian uses his to copy himself in the Main
Memory, for example, and later to electronically pick a lock and as a display
of what he finds in cyberspace. Rosalind Holhess uses hers to record her
dictation, Eddie uses his to send Ross map co-ordinates, and so on. The
Navi is a computer, telephone, and ID all combined, and may be either a
Major or Minor Personal Item depending on its power.
Robot Wings
Given to Armitage by Dr. Asakura just before the battle at Dunwich Hill,
this diaphanous set of wings and lasers allowed her to mount a strong mobile
defence against the attacking Martian military. Unfortunately, they were
destroyed during the attack. The wings have a small power supply to allow
flight, but draw energy for the lasers directly from the wearer. This allows
only a few shots with the powerful beam weapons before they become useless,
but a few shots are usually all that are needed.
Robot wings can only be used by a robot or cyborg, and must be attached
and hooked up before use, which requires a helper to make a Mechanics roll.
Once the wings are connected, the wearer gains the use of two Attributes
so long as they are on- Level 1 of common Flight and Weapon Attack - 3:
Wing Lasers (45 damage, penetrating (armour) x2, uses energy x2). If the
robot wings are hit by a called shot (considered a Called Shot to a Vital
Spot) and take ten or more points of damage, they are destroyed and the
target will fall if in flight. Robot wings are a Major Personal Item.
