Eddie Barrows

Total Character Points: 21
Total Skill Points: 60

A swarthy fellow with horrible fashion sense and usually seen wearing a bright-colored shirt and brown bomber jacket, Eddie Barrows is an officer in the Technical Criminal SWAT. He has quite a smart mouth and often speaks before he thinks about what he is saying, which can get him into a lot of trouble, but he is also adept at talking his way out of things, a necessary skill for a loudmouth. Eddie tries to find humour in nearly everything, perhaps as a defence mechanism against all of the horrible things he has to see and deal with as a police officer, especially one in the TCS.

When Kelly McCanon is killed, Eddie has a hard time believing that she was actually a robot the entire time, and not a robot replacing the actual human singer who had perhaps been kidnapped or run off with a lover. As the evidence grows, however, he accepts the truth, and becomes an important part of the investigation.

It is Eddie who is given the list of Thirds found on Jessica Manning’s Navi to decode, and he quickly unlocks its secret using both his computer skills and his own quick wit. He remembers the striking picture of her model as an angel painted by Manning just before her death, and realizes that the key to the cipher lies within the image. A short time later he presents Ross with Pluto’s list of Thirds, a major breakthrough in the investigation into the murder of the Thirds.
After a warrant is put out for both Ross and Armitage for terrorism due to their assault on Shenora Hospital, Eddie reveals his stubborn loyalty streak. Not only does he not turn Ross in when the fugitive contacts him, Eddie actually decides to help him. He takes the name Ross gives him, Dunwich Hill, and applies his skill and wit to the new puzzle. He quickly discovers that Dunwich Hill isn’t on any map, but that there is a location where a road dead-ends into a hill that is labelled “virgin” by the mapping program. Eddie quickly puts two and two together and gets Dunwich Hill, then meets with Ross secretly to give him that information.

As a result of his actions Eddie is suspended by Lt. Randolph, but this is just a ploy to give the Lieutenant an official excuse not to question him--after all, who knows where a ‘suspended’ officer might be?

Lt. Larry Randolph

Total Character Points: 33
Total Skill Points: 80

The commanding officer of the Mars Police Department Technical Criminal SWAT, Lt. Larry Randolph is a hard-boiled cop who knows how to do both parts of his job, officer and politician, equally well. He is not averse to doing things in a less-than-standard way if it gets results, but he is also adept at covering himself while doing so. Though he suspects Armitage is a Third, even before Ross arrives, he says nothing, as she is a very good cop. For this same reason he allows her to wear a non-standard uniform, choosing to ignore the dress code for her just as he does Eddie. Lt. Randolph understands that results are what count, but he also knows that there is a price to pay for non-standard behaviour unless one is careful about it.

Copyright ©1994-2003 Pioneer Entertainment (USA)Though an older man, with grey hair and a receding hairline, Lt. Randolph is by no means physically unfit. His body is not as well-exercised as his mind, but he is fit and seems healthy. This is no real surprise, as he has to keep the entire TCS in line without compromising their effectiveness- not an easy job, given all the political pressure put on him by various groups with an interest in how robots are treated. Still, Lt. Randolph commands his squad like a natural leader and plays the politicians like a fiddle, which lets him get away with things like having Lowell examine the body of one of the Thirds and putting Eddie on suspension so he can’t be questioned about Ross’ plans. Ultimately, Lt. Randolph does what he thinks is right and tries to help those he cares about--but he does it the smart way.
