SOHC Engine

This engine has GOT to be the underdog of all honda engines. everyone who has a sohc simply rips it out and swaps a b series into the car...but has anyone ever taken the time to actually SEE wtf the sohc is all about? has anyone taken the time to research what is available for the sohc and thus what its performance potential is? well i have...and i'm going to share it with you.

Bizi from dseries.org runs a sohc d16a6 in his CRX HF and gets 10.xx 1/4 mile times. this is without the use of forced induction! so there you have it....the sohc indeed does have potential

The sohc that i refer to is the D16A6...it is the EF Si motor...16v which is the engine that replaced the D15 available on the 1st gen CRX Si which was merely a 12v.

Take the time to visit D series.org...u will learn a lot about these motors..
a great thing to do with the d16a6 is to use B18B/A rods(integra LS) and ZC pistons or even A6 pistons will be fine...this will up compression to 11s and 12s depending on if u use the A6 or ZC(ZC is higher compression). this combined with a good cam, machined head and proper ECU will FLY.

a 3 angle valve job is one of the least expensive yet most effective machine work jobs u can do.. it merely costs 200CDN and is very beneficial...and while you are at it, u could mill the head for higher compression. Also take the time to port match the intake manifold and intake ports and of course run a very good exhaust manifold...my friend Vivek runs a genie header and it's really good. really nice and large..like 50% larger in diameter than litespeed!

As for cam, i know a place(email me: [email protected]) in the GTA(greater toronto area) where you could get a mugen grind, jackson racing grind etc cam for merely 125CDN but u will need to supply your own D16A6 Si Engine Cam as a core.

these mods coupled with intake, exhaust and the common B16 throttle body will yeild you around 160hp easily. if you are thirsting for even more, rip off the A6 head and get a D16Z6 or even Y8 head and slap it on. this is the vtec head and will give u even HIGHER compression...and have vtec. with this i suggest u convert the car to OBD1/2 and run the proper ecu.... do not run with the si computer and merely get a vtec switch because the fuel mappign will not be aggressive enough when the vtec engages and u will run lean...and not have much power.

with this head u can get the Zex cam...which is renouned for giving 12WHP with absolutely no tuning. this with a good ECU program and cam gear will get u something like 18WHP easily. let's not forget to do machine work on ur head and knife edge the crank if you are really hardcore....this will yield you 180+ hp with proper tuning

consult the pros and kings of SOHC at dseries.org for further information. modding a sohc is cheap and effective...and if u ever needed a replacement engine they can be had for under 300CDN. in my eyes, this is a better route than the conventional B series swap. it's cheaper, doesnt require a swap and is DIFFERENT. imagine u...driving a sohc and spanking on B16s all day long..they come over and ask u wot u got..so u pop the hood and what happens next? they pee in their pants....wow.

ECU's u can use on a mildly modified sohc: ZC ecu, D16A1 ECU(1st gen teg). chuck the PM6(si) if u can....that is just garbage
