Strengths:
National University has always been considered the league's underdogs. This
time around, they are not to be taken lightly even with the exit of
backcourt artists Froilan Baguion, Ronnie Cajayon, and Bryan Tolentino.
Rey Mendoza is back to wreak havoc in the paint, with his high rebounding
percentage and ever-present scoring prowess. Newcomer Howard Flor, who is a
6'4" center who has both the advantage of size and speed, Cesar Estolano,
and veteran Benjo Balijon will back up Mendoza in the rebounding department.
Rookies Jonathan Fernandez and Edwin Asoro are expected to lead the
Bulldogs' bench scoring to support role players Marlon Mollena, Cyrus
Malagueño, and Catamora brothers Dave and Chris.
Weaknesses:
The NU backcourt was hit the hardest with the exit of its top
playmakers, Froilan Baguion. Remaining playmakers Alex Miclat and Fil-Am
Ronald King should step up. Inexperience of the holdovers will also be the
team's waterloo this year as decision- making skills will be put to test
against the other team's backcourt generals.
Prognosis:
The Bulldogs did not participate in the Fr. Martin Cup to concentrate on
the team's build-up this UAAP Season. Coach Rico Perez said that focus was
put on making the team more solid, given a handful of rookies and the
much-needed psychological toughness. It could be that the Bulldogs are
cooking up a big surprise for the eight-team field to witness. (taken
