Wish is a sweet little tale about Angels and Demons and Humans.  Okay...lets be a bit more precise.   Wish begins on a night when Doctor Shuichiro Kudo is walking home at the end of his shift.  He comes across an angel, Kohaku (means Amber), being harassed by a couple of crows.  Because it is night time Kohaku is in zir chibi form...(being that Kohaku hasn't been around long enough to learn enough magic and gain enough maturity to keep zir adult angel form after the sun goes down) and at first Shuichiro thinks that Kohaku is some kind of special talking doll.... Because Shuichiro rescued Kohaku for the crows, Kohaku offers him a wish, but Shuichiro claims that he has everything he could possibly want and has no need for wishes--or make belief angels either (at that point Shuichiro is beginning to believe that he's fallen asleep somewhere outside and is dreaming).  Because Kohaku can't fulfill zir wish gift to Shuichiro instead ze elects to stay with the doctor and make his life more interesting.  So, Shuichiro, believing that come morning this will all be gone like a dream, he goes home with Kohaku fluttering along beside him, and he tucks himself off to bed.  Come morning he wakes up...to find his garden being watered...and he sees Kohaku transform into zir adult angel form, that of a lovely and androgynous youth.  Kohaku is neither male nor female.   Kohaku proceeds to make Shuichiro's life very interesting, and Shuichiro finds that his empty and lonely house grows less--empty, because first shows up Koryuu (Garnet) the young demon (ze's about same "age" as Kohaku so ze can't stay in adult form during the day...another chibi...he's cute and cubby too, just like chibi Kohaku).  Koryuu is Kohaku's primary nemesis, whether during the day (in chibi form) or at night when ze is in zir adult form, Koryuu so enjoys harassing Kohaku... It's puppy love don't you know?  What boy doesn't mercilessly tease the girl he likes but is too shy to say so?  Also, as new members of Shuichiro's house are Hisui (Jade), a run away Master Angel, and Kokyuu, the son of the Devil who also happens to be a run away and Hisui's lover/husband.  Kohaku can't cook nor really clean up very well, so Hisui takes over the household chores and the mothering of Kohaku.

This is a sweet story, Kohaku falls in love with the good doctor, ze learns about the outside world, ze is called back to Heaven and ze defiantly returns to earth and Shuichiro despite GOD's order to stay in Heaven.  This story is sad, and sweet, it will make you laugh and it will probably make you cry.  Sometimes it seems very cruel and you wonder how could GOD be so mean to sweet little Kohaku.  Sometimes the punishment doesn't fit the crime (read the story to see what I mean)...and you wonder why punishment for one is so harsh, while for another it's so light.  Ah that's the nature of Heaven...it's arbitrary (of course there is a reason...).

Art:

Kohaku & Shuichiro

Wish is a CLAMP Manga, though it is primarily the work and story of one artist in Team CLAMP, so it seems somehow softer and fluffier than say X-1999 or Magic Rayearth, but nonetheless the art is very nice even if Shuichiro and Kokyuu seem extremely big (and kind of look like twins).  This story has a sameness to the character art...the HANDSOME male characters all have the same face shape, long strong nose, narrow eyes, stern visage and broad shoulders (the classic V build); while the PRETTY (might be) male characters are all soft and dewy and very feminine while showing no obvious evidence of being or ever having been female, they truly are androgynous (unlike Rayearth where the girls are clearly really pretty girls - there's no ambiguity there!).  The rest of the scenery is very well done.

Personal Note: I really liked Wish though I was disappointed that they had to SEX Kohaku and the other fem. angels as female, when clearly having no breasts and more boyish if effeminate bodies they were anything but, I thought it was a bit of a dodge to satisfy the censors more than anything.  Still, it was a cute and enjoyable story and I am glad that I read it.
