Story:

FAKE is a excellent tale...just excellent!

Ok... let's be serious...Fake is excellent because it has great characters.  Dee and Ryo.  It's excellent because it has great stories...some funny, some serious.  It's great because it has nice art (I admit that it took me a couple of volumes to really appreciate Sanami Matoh's drawing style...but Fake was worth that growing appreciation.)  It's also great because it is a full fledged... boiling over...mouth smacking.... M/M event!  Fake is Shonen Ai with a plus! It is so close to being Yaoi...that I don't know why it isn't...I have read some Yaoi Manga that didn't go as far as this one.  It took until the Seventh volume before their relationship was beautifully consummated...but ah...the wait was so worth it.

There are moments of extreme humour...the wet your pants falling down kind of humour.  And there are moments when you cry right along with one or the other of them (Dee or Ryo)...You get involved in this story.  It isn't just the moments of Dee glomping Ryo...it isn't just the big wet kneeshattering kisses.  It's the heart and soul this story has.

This story has a strong support cast to play along with the leads: Bikki (who Ryo took in near the beginning of the story) and Carol (the pickpocket who happens to be Bikki's friend and was also introduced early in the story) have their own little subplot.  Go Bikki.  He's like three years younger than Carol...but at 15 he gets the girl of his dreams...heh.  So a little HET interest for you hetero fans.  Then there is JayJay, who is like madly in love with Dee -- and whom Dee is always making hasty retreats from...GO DEE!  JJ is cute and he even has his own chapter in one of the volumes.  There's the Chief (a.k.a Badger/Walrus) who is more bluster than bite.  There's the ever present FBI agent Diana Spacey...always showing up to work a case...even though she's like from LA and they are located in NY...oh well, not like a whole country to get in the way of her clever investigative talents.  Finally there's Commissioner (or something) Berkley Rose, who has the hots for Ryo.  And theres Leo (Read the stories to find out about him)...and the gang at the 27th...

Enough said.  Buy the series if you want more.

Art:

The Artwork took a tiny amount of getting used to (for me) but I soon grew to love and appreciate it.  Ryo is definitely beautiful and Dee...he's a handsome devil.  I have tried to read other manga where you are supposed to believe so-an-so is cute or beautiful and I've had a real hard time seeing it...but not so in the case of FAKE.  I can truly believe that Ryo is beautiful and the Dee is handsome.  Bikki is cute and he's going to grow up to be stunning, Carol is already turning heads...even agent Spacey is pretty.  Damn, don't focus so much on appearance.  The trees look like trees, cars look like cars, guns like guns, building like...well you get the picture...

Presentation: Love it, the characters are distinct and different.  Well rounded, believable... you feel for them, cry for them, laugh with them.

Personal Note:

I love FAKE.  It is probably one of my most favourite and most read in my collection.  I enjoyed all of FAKE, not just volume 7 where Dee finally got Ryo in the way we all wanted him to do.  This story though not continuous as each chapter often dealt with a different "case", still had the constant theme of the team of Dee and Ryo both at work and on there own time.  It is a wonderful story and I highly recommend it.
