Stingrays

These fishes belong to the family Potamotrygonidae, the Peruvian forms lives in sand botton in rivers or in "cochas" (lakes) are livebearers predatory fish, their diet in nature consists mostly on fish and small crustacean. Is long easy to sex the stingrays there are a couple of pictures in this section where is possible see the diference, In the picture named "Potamotrygon sp. Tiger MALE" the "penis" in the sides of the tail is noted, the other picture named "Female stingray" is very clear no penis in the sides of the tail or next or the fins. Classification of stingrays is not too clear until now, many different color patterns available, therefore lots of common names are now in the stocklist of expoters. Average size of stingrays for export is about 25 to 35 cm but is possible ship up to 60 cm disc stingray in special boxes designed specifically for that. Here at NeoTropical Fauna we offer to our customers the most possible accuracy on the stingrays' terminology This fish are a lot of fun, in short time is possible train to eat from the hands of the keeper, but have in mind that stingrays have a powerfull spine in the tail; big stingrays have double or even triple spines coated with a mucus, causing painfull wounds, this is a big problem for the fishermen who sometimes arrival in very bad conditions due to the wounds, like fever, vomits and infections in extreme cases (see pic). Breeding in captivity is not well developed, due to the big size this fish can reach; there are a lilltle production of captive breed motoro stingray in Thailand and in private collections. We are working in a big project in this matter with the most beatifull stingrays.
