Flattened bamboo, with preservative & coating, is indeed elegant.

Many/Most mountain people build kubo from bamboo without
knowledge of preservatives. About every four years, they
have to tear down rotting kubo then build new one.

No fish high up in mountain. So in exchange for hospitality
(for accomodating our sleep the night before inside their kubo),
my parting gift was delata sardines!
