File Split Master

I started work on this program out of frustration because there was no easy way to split HUGE text files on CMD drives on the Commodore 64. I feel having a file splitting program is particularly useful if we download massive test documents off the internet, and wish to convert the ASCII text into a format recognizable by the many Commodore word processors out there.

Anyway, this program allows you to split a file up as many as 100 ways at the most on just about any disk drive (The exceptions being the IDE HD and RAMDOSed REUs... for now).

Note that with File Split Master, the program doesn't actually copy split versions of the original file to another drive. It quite literally splits the original file into bits on the same disk and drive you command. So, before using this program, ensure you have a backup copy of the text file - should you wish to keep it in it's original format. Splitting up the file from the one drive and directory in the way as done in this program makes the process VERY quick - even with huge 2000 block or more files.

From the main menu, you can select the drive you wish to work from, and then list the directory to the screen or give the drive a disk command. Also, you will find options to set the output files as PRG files or SEQ files (SEQ files is the default setting, as most ASCII conversion programs use SEQ files). Also, you can select whether to split the file up by block range, or by number of parts.

Once you have set the filename and have started the program, you will be shown the file and how many blocks it uses. Then you will have an opportunity to input how you would like the file to be split up according to your preferences.

A good benchmark to use if you are (like me) using the program to make GeoWrite compatible files, is 600 blocks per part. That's just enough to fit inside a Geowrite file. After you have split the file, you will be able to convert the text with "Wrong is Write 7" or any other converter you have for some other word processer you may be using.

One you have given the program the OK, it then goes to work.

This program is public domain, so please spread it freely. But, because of that you use it AT YOUR OWN RISK! The program rewrites the directory of a disk/partition you use, and there is the possibility (however slight) that it could screw up your disk's directory. Naturally, I have of course not programmed the program to do that, and I have tested the program and found it to be trouble free myself. Also, don't forget to backup any important files. Once a file has been split, there is no linking program to fix it!

If you do find any nasty bugs or have any comments, please report them to me at [email protected]

Thanks,
