ext. house - night
SUPER: November 31st, 1957
Screams can be heard inside the house. It is a dark,
foreboding house. Straight from a horror movie.
narrator (v.o.)
This house is home to a secret. A secret that anyone would want to know, yet no-one will come to know. A secret that can drive one insane.
int. house basement door - night
The screaming has
stopped. There is a door. There is no handle, it is just a
door. It is surrounded by green paint, and has some on the surface.
NARRATOR (V.O.)
This door, holds a terrible secret.
int. house basement door - day
A man has come down the stairs. He has a roll of
wallpaper. He starts applying the
wallpaper over the paint splattered door.
NARRATOR (V.O.)
A secret, that needs to be hidden.
int. house basement - day
The man has finished wallpapering the basement. The
door is no longer visible, as the man makes his way up the basement stairs.
NARRATOR (V.O.)
The door, safe from prying eyes. Keeping others safe
from the insanity it brings.
ext. house - day
SUPER: August 22nd, 2007
There is a condemned sign in front of the house.
NARRATOR (V.O.)
The house, hopefully, will be destroyed.
SARAH, 27, pulls up in a car. She gets out, and goes to
the door of the house. She rings the doorbell.
Sarah
Hello? Anyone in there?
She waits a moment, then rings again.
SARAH
Hello?
A man's voice can be heard inside, indistinct. The lock
twists, and the doorknob turns. The door opens, to reveal DEREK, 31.
DEREK
Can I help you?
SARAH
I see you're planning to knock down this house?
DEREK
Yes, we are. Why do you ask?
SARAH
Well, see, I'm a real estate agent, and my client is looking
for a "fixer upper". I was wondering if you would be interested in
selling it?
DEREK
Well, you see.
Derek motions her closer
DEREK
(Whispering)
This house is haunted. 50 years ago, the previous
owners were all found in the basement, chopped to pieces.
Sarah has a look that she doesn't believe him.
SARAH
I have no time for ghost stories. Is it for sale or not?
Derek shrugs.
DEREK
I personally don't believe it myself, I'm only
landlord. Anyway, if your client is really interested, I'll sell it to
you. Not like anyone else will want it. It's a really nice house.
SARAH
Great, here's my card.
She hands him a business card.
SARAH
(Cont'd)
Any questions just call me.
DEREK
Of course.
Sarah nods, and walks back down the walk. Derek watches
her go inside her car and drive off, then goes back inside the house.
int. house - day
Derek walks through the house. The furniture is still
in there, dust covers over all of it. There are no lights on in the
house, and it appears very ominous, even during the day. The kind of
place you don't want to be in at night.
Derek approaches the back door, and leaves.
ext. house backyard - day
He walks across the lawn, up to a trailer. There is a
cable connecting the trailer and the house, the doorbell cable.
int. trailer - day
Derek gets into the trailer. He sits back down at his
table, and continues eating his meal.

EXT. HOUSE - DAY
The front of the house no longer has a condemned sign.
It now has a "Sold" sign.
int. creed car - day
The Creed family, the father, PAUL, 35, the mother, JANET,
34, the son, JOHN, 14, and the daughter, REBECCA, 11, are all riding in their
car.
Paul
Aren't you guys excited? It'll be a new adventure for
all of us!
ext. street - day
The Creed's car drives by, with a moving truck behind them.
INT. CREED CAR - DAY
john
Sure, Dad. I'm really excited.
Janet
Oh, come on guys! Get excited!
rebecca
What was wrong with our old house?
Paul
Nothing was wrong with it.
EXT. intersection - day
The Creed's car takes a left turn. The moving truck
follows.
INT. CREED CAR - DAY
Paul
(Cont'd)
It's just that, this house is really big. We just have to do some
cleaning and work, that's all.
John and Rebecca don't look convinced.
janet
C'mon guys! It'll be fun.
JOHN
It just means more chores.
JANET
So? It'll teach you guys responsibility.
Both John and Rebecca look out their respective windows.
ext. stop sign - day
The car stops at the sign. They continue. The moving truck is still behind them.
INT. CREED CAR - DAY
paul
We're almost there.
John and Rebecca are still quiet.
EXT. HOUSE - DAY
The Creed car turns down the street, and heads up to the
house.
INT. CREED CAR - DAY
PAUL
Well, here we are!
JOHN
Whoa! The house is huge!
rebecca
And creepy...is it haunted?
Paul and Janet look at each other
janet
Of course not, honey. But guess what?
John and Rebecca look at her expectantly.
janet
You guys better go pick your rooms!
John and Rebecca open their doors almost simultaneously.
EXT. HOUSE - DAY
The Creed car is sitting on the curb. The two kids are
running up the walk to the house. The moving truck is also on the
curb.
The kids get to the door, only to find that it's locked. They run back to
the car, their parents already out, stretching.
JOHN
Dad, the door's locked.
paul
Oh, right.
Paul fishes a key out of his pocket and tosses it to John.
PAUL
Here's the key, go find your rooms, then bring your things
inside.
JOHN
Okay.
John runs back to the door with Rebecca on his heels.
They reach it, and John unlocks the door.
int. house - day
The door opens, and the kids enter. The house is now
completely empty, but it still doesn't get rid of that ominous presence.
The kids look around the house, and find a kitchen, dining
room, and living room. A typical first floor. They never find
the door to the basement, which is also covered with wallpaper.
They go upstairs and find four bedrooms. Both of the
kids
claim one, across from each other, and then run back downstairs and outside.
EXT. HOUSE - DAY
The moving workers are already bringing in boxes. The
kids take their bags, and run back inside.
fade to:
int. house - night
The family is now sitting in the living room. Janet is
going through a box with Paul, while John plays a game boy, and Rebecca reads a
book.
The light casts a nice glow throughout the room. All of
the other lights in the house are off.
JANET
Hey, John, can you run this upstairs to Dad and I's bedroom.
JOHN
One second.
John still plays his video game.
janet
(Frustrated)
Now, John.
JOHN
Hold on a second!
paul
John, you listen to your mother.
John sighs, then grabs the bag Janet wanted upstairs. He's still holding his game boy.
He turns on the light at the foot of the stairs, and heads
upward. He reaches the top, and gropes for the hall light. He finds
it, flips it, but it doesn't turn on.
He gropes down the hall to his parent's bedroom, and opens
the
door.
He looks for the light switch, but doesn't find one. He
then leaves the bag next to the door, and hurries out of the room.
There is a SCRATCHING noise upstairs in one of the
rooms. John looks around, and looks in his room, finds nothing. He
looks in Rebecca's room, finds nothing, he then turns to the fourth, empty
room. He opens the door, and the SCRATCHING gets louder.
JOHN
(Meekly)
Hello?
The SCRATCHING continues. John gropes for the light
switch, and doesn't find one. He then uses his game boy for
light.
It's a small light, barely illuminating part of the
room. He shines it around.
He spots something on the wall. Words. He slowly walks
toward the wall, driven by curiosity more than anything. The game boy is
shining light directly on the words scratched into the wood.
John is now standing directly in front of the scratched message, and he leans in to read it.
It says "Do not open the door. It"
There is a THUD behind John. He slowly turns around,
and sees a grotesque looking man standing behind him.
man
Don't open the door!
John SCREAMS and runs out of the room, dropping his game boy
on the ground. He races down the stairs, and into the living room.
john
(Breathlessly)
There's...a...
JANET
What is it honey?
john
(Still breathless)
There's...a...a...
paul
Take a breath, son.
John takes a breath
john
There's a monster upstairs!
JANET
Oh, honey, there's no such things as monsters. It think
you've been playing too many video games.
john
No, really! It was in the other room! It
scratched a message in the wall!
PAUL
John...
JOHN
Go and look!
Paul sighs.
paul
Fine, I'll go look.
He picks up a flashlight, and goes upstairs. He enters the fourth room, and finds the game boy. There's no man in the room. But the inscription is still there.
John comes up behind him.
john
Look! It's the message!
Paul goes and reads the message
paul
(Reading)
Do not open the door. It. Probably just the kids who
lived here last time, scratching the wall.
john
But, I heard the scratching!
paul
Son, there is no monster, and this message looks like it
could've been scratched by a kid with a butter knife or something. Don't
worry about it.
John looks reluctant.
PAUL
C'mon, let's go back downstairs.
John picks up the game boy, and they walk back downstairs.
fade to:
int. house - day
John wakes up in his bed. The sun is
filtering in through his bedroom window. He gets out of bed, and leaves
his room.
He makes his way down the stairs, and finds his way to the
kitchen. Paul & Janet are already up, both of them sipping coffee at
a kitchen table.
JOHN
Good morning.
PAUL
Good morning, John
JANET
Good morning
john
What's for breakfast?
paul
Well, I was going to fry up some eggs, but the gas isn't
connected yet. So, I guess you'll have to have some toast, and there's a
banana over on the counter.
Paul points to the banana, and John gets some bread, toasts
it, and then sits down at the table with buttered toast, and a banana, and a
glass of milk.
Rebecca enters, in her pajamas.
paul
Good morning, honey.
Rebecca has a scared look on her face.
paul
What's wrong?
REBECCA
I saw it.
janet
Saw what?
rebecca
(Whispering)
The monster.
janet
Oh, honey, there's no such things as monsters. You
probably just had a nightmare.
Rebecca shakes her head.
rebecca
It was real.
paul
Well, whatever it was, you're safe now with us. Why
don't you have breakfast?
Rebecca shakes her head again.
rebecca
We're not safe. Not safe at all.
janet
Honey? Are you okay?
rebecca
(Murmuring)
Not safe...not safe...not safe...
fade to:
ext. medical clinic - day
There is a sign that says "Lakeland Medical Clinic"
It's in a busier part of town.
int. medical clinic examination room
- day
Rebecca is sitting on an examining table, still murmuring
indistinct to herself. A doctor is talking to Paul.
doctor
So, when did this start?
paul
This morning, she got up, and said she saw a monster.
The doctor makes a note on his clipboard. He examines
the clipboard, then looks up at Paul.
doctor
Mr. Creed, I think you're daughter is suffering from some
trauma. Was there anything around that could make her believe she saw a
monster.
paul
Well, we just moved into a new house. Her big brother,
John, also said last night that he saw a monster. Could that have scared
her?
doctor
It's a possibility. Mr. Creed, some children have
problems adjusting to new locations. Your daughter might also just be
going through a "Scared of the Dark" stage. I would suggest buying her a
night light or something of that sort, just to ease her mind.
paul
And if that doesn't help?
doctor
If that doesn't help, then have her sleep with you, or her
brother. She's young yet.
paul
Thank you, doctor.
Paul stands, and beckons Rebecca to follow.
doctor
Remember to check out at the main desk.
Paul nods, and him and Rebecca leave the room.
fade to:
int. house - day
John is wandering around the house, intrigued. The sun
is shining very brightly, although the house still seems ominous. John
walks into the living room
Janet is going through some boxes, she places a lamp on an
end table next to the sofa.
JANET
Hey, John. Are you unpacked?
john
Yeah.
janet
Hey, why don't you see if there are any "secret passages"
around! That could be fun.
john
(Brightens)
Hey, yeah!
John picks up a flashlight and starts looking around the
house. He walks upstairs and looks at the ceiling. He finds a
string for the attic, and pulls it down.
A bat flies out, and John dives for the ground, but the bat
just hits the wall, and falls to the ground, dead.
There's now another staircase leading up. John clicks
on his flashlight, and starts walking up.
The attic is very dusty, if it even can be called an
attic. A door opens, and John walks into the large room. His
flashlight the only source of light, he looks around.
The attic is almost empty, save for a pile of paintings in
the corner. It is dark, and John flashes his light toward the
paintings. He walks toward them, and looks at the first one.
It's an empty frame, no painting in it. Upon further
inspection, John finds that they're all empty frames, with sheets of paper in
them.
However, the sheets of paper have writing on them. "Operor non patefacio ianua. Is mos coegi vos rabidus." This phrase is repeated over and over. John reads it, then runs downstairs.
Janet is still in the living room, although there are now a
few boxes gone, and the living room is more furnished now. There is a few
decorations on the fireplace mantle, and the sofa now has a few cushions on
it.
john
Mom!
janet
What is it, John?
john
I found some paper in the attic! It says something, but
I can't read it.
JANET
Well, maybe it's a secret code?
john
Maybe. I don't know. It's weird, because it's
written by hand, and it's repeated over and over.
janet
That is weird. Well, maybe when your father comes home,
he will take a look at it?
john
Maybe. I'm going to explore some more!
janet
Okay, I'm going to make lunch soon though.
john
Okay.
John starts to wander again. This time he goes around the first floor. He finds a laundry chute, and looks into it. He then crawls inside.
John slides down the chute, and he turns on his flashlight,
to see where he's going. He reaches the bottom and hits the floor.
int. house basement - day
John looks around with his flashlight. There is an old
washer/dryer combo, and there's also a flight of stairs. He can see the
wallpaper. There's also an old ax standing against a wall. There's
a broom, and a dustpan.
John stands up, and makes his way toward the staircase. He shines the light at the stairs. They are intact, but dusty. He starts climbing them.
He reaches the top, and finds a door. He twists the
knob, it twists easily. He pushes it, but it doesn't open.
int. house - day
There is a wall. It is bending, with John pushing the
door behind it.
INT. HOUSE BASEMENT - DAY
John pushes it harder and harder.
INT. HOUSE - DAY
The wallpaper bends more and more. Suddenly, it bursts open, with John falling through the created doorway.
Janet looks over, and sees John on the ground
janet
John!
She runs toward him.
janet
(Cont'd)
What happened?
JOHN
(Breathless)
I found the basement...
JANET
Basement? I don't remember hearing about a basement.
JOHN
Right through this door.
Janet looks at the doorway.
janet
What's down there?
john
Just a washer/dryer combo. And an old ax, broom, and
dustpan. And really ugly wallpaper.
Janet looks at the doorway again. The door is swinging,
the wallpaper still attached. There is no doorknob on this side of the
door.
JANET
Let's wait for your father to come home.
John nods in agreement.
fade to:
int. house - day
The front door opens, with Paul & Rebecca walking through. Rebecca still looks traumatized, and Paul looks tired.
Janet walks to Paul
janet
(Whispering)
How'd it go?
paul
(Whispering)
Doctor said trauma. He suggested a night light, or have
her sleep with John or us.
janet
Let's try the night light. I think I have one of those
light-up air fresheners.
paul
Sounds good.
Rebecca still has a blank look. John walks into the
room.
john
Dad! You should see all the stuff we found!
janet
Yes, we've been very busy this afternoon.
paul
Really? Like what?
JOHN
Well, first we found a attic with framed sheets of paper that
says something we can't understand. Then I found a basement!
paul
A basement and an attic? Sounds like an omen.
They are walking to the living room. There are now no
boxes in the living room, and it is fully unpacked. Janet shoots Paul a
dirty look.
rebecca
More than an omen.
Everyone looks at Rebecca, surprised.
REBECCA
Don't open the door.
She then resumes her strange, blank look.
JANET
(Whispering to Paul)
Did the doctor suggest possession?
PAUL
(Whispering back)
No.
fade out
THUNDER booms
fade in:
INT. HOUSE - NIGHT
It is storming out. The lamps are on in the living
room. Janet and Rebecca are sitting on the sofa. Paul & John
enter.
janet
So, what do you think, hon?
paul
Well, I think it's a foreign language, my guess is Latin or
Greek.
janet
Have you seen the basement yet?
paul
No, John was going to show me that next.
JANET
Oh, okay
John beckons Paul, and they walk to the basement
entrance. The wallpaper has been torn down. The door is sitting
there, but it has no doorknob. John & Paul descend into the darkness,
armed with only their flashlights.
int. house basement - night
Two flashlight beams pierce into the muffling darkness. They
look around the dark basement, while thunder BOOMS in
the distance.
They find the ax, and Paul picks it up. He puts his
thumb to the blade, and then draws it back, blood trickling down it.
paul
Odd, it's still sharp.
He then carefully puts it back down. They find the
washer/dryer, and they look in both.
There's just a slip of paper in one, Paul takes it out and
looks at it. It is a very old piece of paper. It says: "Verrichten
niet uitproberen voor toegankelijk naar de portier. Naar de portier zit slecht.
Naar de portier zit slecht."
Paul
I think it's a different language.
john
I wonder what it could mean?
paul
I don't know, I'll keep the paper, see if we can get it
translated.
Paul pockets the slip of paper. He then directs his
flashlight up, to where the light bulb socket should be.
There is a bulb up there, but it is covered with
cobwebs. There is a string suspending down from it, and Paul reaches for
it.
CLICK. Nothing happens.
paul
It's a dead bulb.
John & Paul head back toward the stairs.
int. house - night
John and Paul enter. They walk to the living room,
where Rebecca and Janet wait on the sofa. There is a fire in the
fireplace.
paul
She said anything?
janet
No, she's been quiet. Hasn't said a word.
Paul grunts.
janet
What did you find down there?
paul
Well, I found the ax, it's still sharp. There was also
an old washer/dryer combo that needs to come out. A little
cleaning, some new wallpaper, it'll look nice down there.
john
Dad, tell mom about the paper!
paul
Oh, right.
Paul pulls the slip of paper from his pocket.
paul
(Cont'd)
We found this in the dryer. What do you make of it?
He hands the paper to Janet, who reads it.
janet
It's Dutch.
paul
Oh, okay. Do you know what it says?
JANET
Let me see...
Rebecca suddenly snatches the paper from Janet, and tosses it
into the fire. She then sits back down on the sofa.
paul
Rebecca! What did you do that for.
Rebecca just looks at him, her eyes glazed.
janet
Rebecca! Answer your father.
Rebecca looks toward the fire.
Janet beckons to speak with Paul alone, they go into the next
room.
janet
I think you might want to take Rebecca to a therapist.
paul
A therapist?
janet
I think she's possessed.
paul
Oh, come on. I just think she's traumatized, and
doesn't know what she's doing, that's all.
Suddenly, there's a SCREAM from the other room. Janet
and Paul run back into the living room.
Rebecca is standing over John with a knife in her hand.
paul
Where'd she get that from?
JANET
I don't know!
John has a gash on his right arm. Rebecca looks up at her parents.
Paul starts walking slowly toward Rebecca.
paul
Rebecca, honey, put down the knife. No one wants to
hurt you. Just put down the knife.
Rebecca stares at them. She raises the knife.
PAUL
Rebecca!
Rebecca plunges the knife. It sinks into John's
shoulder. John SCREAMS in pain. Paul rushes forward and quickly
shoves Rebecca onto the sofa. He then slowly removes the knife from
John's shoulder.
janet
Rebecca!
Rebecca just stares at everyone.
INT. MEDICAL CLINIC EXAMINATION ROOM
- DAY
John is sitting on the examination table. He has a
large bandage over his shoulder and arm. The doctor turns to speak with
Paul.
DOCTOR
He will be all right. He may suffer from slight
paralysis, but once it heals, it'll go away.
paul
Great, how long will that take?
DOCTOR
Oh, 4 - 7 weeks. Depends. As long as he doesn't
strain it too bad, he'll be fine.
paul
Okay, thanks a lot doc.
cut to:
int. therapist's office - day
Janet and Rebecca are sitting in front of a therapist's desk.
therapist
Now, what seems to be the problem?
janet
Well, you see, I think that Rebecca's...
Janet pauses, then leads closer to whisper.
janet
(Cont'd)
Possessed.
therapist
What makes you think that, Mrs. Creed?
janet
Well, she stabbed her brother. Which is odd in itself,
because they get along so well. She also hasn't talked for the last
few days. She's usually a big talker, right Rebecca?
Rebecca just stares into space.
therapist
Interesting. Well, you see, Mrs. Creed, I think your
daughter is merely suffering from a traumatic experience. Is there anything
recently that could have traumatized her?
JANET
(Thinking for a few seconds)
Ummm, well, the other day, she said she saw a monster.
therapist
Did she see any scary movies that could have influenced the
appearance of the "monster"?
JANET
No. We moved into a new house.
Janet leans in toward the therapist
JANET
(Cont'd) (Whispering)
The house is supposedly haunted.
therapist
Ah, I see.
The therapist jots some notes down into a notebook.
therapist
Well, Mrs. Creed, I think your daughter is suffering from
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. It occurs when one has a paticularly
traumatic incident. I think your daughter has actually thought she had seen a monster, so she
thinks it's real. Perhaps we should see if she can recount it?
Rebecca?
Rebecca looks at the therapist.
therapist
Rebecca, can you tell me what happened in your bedroom?
REBECCA
Do not open the door...
therapist
Door? What door is it Rebecca? Can you remember?
REBECCA
Portier zit slecht, portier zit slecht.
therapist
What does that mean, Rebecca?
rebecca
The door...
The therapist slams both fists down on the table.
THERAPIST
Rebecca!
Rebecca shakes her head, then looks at the therapist.
rebecca
What? Who are you?
therapist
What happened in your bedroom?
REBECCA
There was a really scary monster, and he told me something...
THERAPIST
What did he tell you?
rebecca
He told me...
Rebecca shakes her head again, and looks down.
THERAPIST
Rebecca?
(beat)
Rebecca?
Rebecca slowly looks up.
REBECCA
Do not open the door. The door is evil. It will
make you insane.
The therapist and Janet look at each other

INT. CREED CAR - DAY
Paul and John are sitting in the car. Paul is driving.
paul
So, John, what exactly happened before your sister...you
know...
john
Well, I just said, 'Rebecca, why did you throw that paper
into the fire. It was probably important' Then she said, 'It was
nothing anyone needed to see' and I said...
paul
(Interrupting)
Whoa, wait a second. She actuallly said something to
you?
JOHN
Yeah.
paul
Continue.
john
Well, then I said, 'How would you know?' then she said
some gibberish, and came at me with a knife! I had no idea what I did.
paul
(In thought)
Hmmm...
ext. stop sign - day
The car stops, then continues.

john
Well, I screamed, and you guys came out.
paul
Hmmm...
They drive in silence.

That sounds good, why don't we all go to bed. It is
late.
john
Yeah.

The family is sitting around the kitchen table.
Sunlight streams into the room.
paul
You all sleep well last night?
john
I did. My arm hurt, though.
paul
Good. Rebecca, how did you sleep?
Rebecca doesn't say anything. She
looks afraid now more than anything.
paul
So, John, do you think you can help me clean the basement
today?
john
I can try...don't know what I can help with though.
paul
Well, um, I don't know, actually. Maybe you can help
your mother with something.
janet
Well, I'm not sure. I have the living room set
up...your bedroom is set up. Maybe we could clean the attic?
JOHN
Okay, but what about Rebecca?
JANET
She'll help us too.
They continue eating breakfast.
janet
Paul, what exactly are you going to be doing in the basement?
paul
Well, I was thinking of tearing down that old wallpaper, then
taking out the old washer and dryer. I also need to do some cleaning, and
I was thinking of putting in a light fixture. Running over to the
hardware store, or something. See how the ceiling looks.
janet
That sounds good.
fade to:
int. house - day
Janet, John, and Rebecca are in the attic. Rebecca is sitting in a corner, staring at everybody. Janet is looking at the frames, while John is looking at a covered window
janet
Hey, these are nice frames.
john
There's a window here...
janet
We could use these for our own pictures...
JOHN
I wonder if I can uncover it...
Janet picks up the frames, while John claws at the window
with his good arm. Nothing happens to the windows
JANET
Hey, these are light
john
Stupid window...I can't get it open
JANET
Hey, John could you carry these downstairs?
John finally realizes his mother.
JOHN
Oh, yeah...sure.
John picks up the frames with his left hand.
JANET
And throw out the papers. I don't think they're
important.
JOHN
Okay.
John walks downstairs with the frames in hand. In the
living room, he sets them down, and gasps for breath. He then rips out
the paper, crumples them into balls, and throws them into the kitchen
trash. One doesn't quite make it, and he walks over to pick it up.
He picks it up, and puts it in the trash. He then turns
around, leans the frames against the living room wall, and walks back upstairs.
Janet is now sweeping the floor of the attic. John
enters, and walks back to the window. Rebecca is still sitting in the
corner.
JOHN
I wonder if dad could get this window open?
Janet looks over at him.
janet
He probably could. There's that ax in the basement, you
know.
JOHN
I'll ask him when he gets home.
JANET
Okay, meanwhile, could you help me sweep? I have a
small pile here...

Paul's car speeds by.

int. hardware store - day
Paul is in the light section. He finds a light fixture that he likes, and then walks to the counter. He pays in cash, then leaves the store.
ext. house - day
Paul pulls up in the car. He gets out with the hardware
store bag in his hand, and enters the house.
int. house - day
The door opens, and Paul enters.
paul
I'm home!
Paul closes the door behind him.
Janet walks into the foyer.
janet
Hey! We got the attic cleaned. Those are nice
light fixtures...
Paul has pulled out the lights.
paul
I bought two, one for the attic, one for the basement.
I was thinking...is it possible to carpet both?
JANET
We'd need to put in a new roof. Then the rain won't
come in.
PAUL
Well, I was planning on a new roof anyway.
JANET
Okay. When do you think we can get this done?
They walk into the living room and sit down.
PAUL
Well, I'll get some new roofing from the hardware store.
janet
Don't you think it'll be easier to hire a contractor?
paul
Sure, it'll be easier...but more expensive.
JANET
I really think we should hire a contractor.
paul
Fine...we'll hire a contractor...but I'm putting in the new
carpet!
JANET
Okay, that's a compromise.
PAUL
Well, I should tear the wallpaper down, should we paint?
JANET
Sure...I think that'd look nicer.
PAUL
Okay, I go to the store...pick up some carpet and some
paint.
JANET
Why don't you tear the wallpaper first?
paul
I should really get the paint...then I can tear the
wallpaper, then paint right away
JANET
Okay, do it your way.
John enters.
JOHN
I can't find Rebecca!
paul
Where was the last place you saw her?
JOHN
Well, I thought she was following me down from the
attic...then when I tried to talk to her...she didn't talk back. I turned
around, and she wasn't there! I went back up to the attic, but she wasn't
there either.
PAUL
Did you check her room?
JOHN
Yeah. I checked there too.
Suddenly, there is a NOISE behind them. They turn
around, and Rebecca is standing there.
paul
Rebecca? Honey? Where were you?
Rebecca looks at her father. She then starts to
cry. She simply breaks down.
Paul and Janet go forward to comfort their daughter.
John stands there staring at them all.
JANET
Oh, honey, it's all right.
paul
What happened, honey?
Rebecca simply continues to cry.
john
Rebecca?
Rebecca blinks away her tears.
paul
What's wrong?
rebecca
He's dead!
PAUL
Who's dead, Rebecca?
REBECCA
He's dead!
JANET
Rebecca? Honey?
REBECCA
Why did Derek have to die?
JANET
The old landlord?
REBECCA
I loved him! Why did he have to die?
PAUL
Rebecca?
REBECCA
(Shouting)
No!
Rebecca bolts up.
REBECCA
(Screaming)
No! No! Don't kill him! Leave him alone!
Rebecca starts running into the dining room. She runs out of
view.
PAUL
(Shouting)
Rebecca!
JANET
Paul, go after her!
Paul gets up and runs after Rebecca, out of view.
John looks at Janet.
JOHN
I think something's wrong with Rebecca.
JANET
Something very wrong.
Rebecca is standing in a corner of the foyer. Paul
enters, and Rebecca looks at him.
REBECCA
Daddy?
PAUL
What, Rebecca?
REBECCA
(Whispering)
There's someone next to you.
Paul looks next to him, only to find nothing.
PAUL
There's no one next to me.
REBECCA
Daddy, I'm scared.
Paul opens his arms.
PAUL
Come here, honey.
Rebecca goes into her father's arms, crying again.
REBECCA
Daddy, what's happening?
PAUL
I don't know...I don't know...
cut to:
INT. THERAPIST'S OFFICE - DAY
There is a KNOCK at the door.
THERAPIST
Come in.
Paul and Rebecca enter.
THERAPIST
Sit down, make yourselves comfortable.
Paul and Rebecca sit down in two plush chairs in front of the
therapist.
THERAPIST
Now, what happened this time?
PAUL
Well, I think Rebecca is ready to tell you.
THERAPIST
Rebecca?
Rebecca shifts in her chair uncomfortably
REBECCA
It all started in my room...
THERAPIST
What did, Rebecca?
REBECCA
(Whispering)
The monster.
THERAPIST
What did the monster look like?
REBECCA
Like...
She pauses.
THERAPIST
Maybe you could draw it?
REBECCA
Okay.
The therapist reaches into their desk, and pulls out a paper
and pencil.
THERAPIST
Hey, Rebecca, why don't you go sharpen this pencil? The sharpener's over there.
The therapist points toward the sharpener. Rebecca takes the pencil, and walks toward it. She starts sharpening. It's loud.
The therapist leans toward Paul.
THERAPIST
(Whispering)
What she draws will give us an idea on how afraid of the
monster she is. The more "scary" the drawing, the more afraid she is.
PAUL
(Whispering)
Oh, I see.
Rebecca returns from the sharpener, with a sharpened
pencil. She sits down, takes the paper, and starts drawing.
Minutes tick by as Rebecca draws a perfect portrait.
When she's done, she hands it to the therapist. The therapist looks at
it, and gasps.
It's a very, very detailed, gruesome picture of a
corpse.
THERAPIST
This is what came after you?
Rebecca nods.
THERAPIST
Did it threaten you?
Rebecca shakes her head.
THERAPIST
Then, what did it say?
REBECCA
(Whispering)
Do not open the door.
cut to:
int. house - day
John and Janet are sitting in the living room.
JOHN
Mom, I'm scared.
JANET
Don't worry...I'm sure Rebecca will get better.
JOHN
Can we move?
Janet sighs.
JANET
No, don't worry. Your sister just had a bad dream or
something. Don't be scared because of her.
JOHN
But, what about what I saw?
JANET
I don't know honey...I just don't know anymore.
cut to:
INT. THERAPIST'S OFFICE - DAY
The therapist is examining the picture.
THERAPIST
Rebecca, how many times have you seen this monster?
REBECCA
I don't know. A lot.
THERAPIST
Hmmm...interesting.
The therapist examines some notes.
THERAPIST
Rebecca, have you had nightmares? Or have you just seen
the monster awake?
REBECCA
I have nightmares too.
THERAPIST
Hmmm...
The therapist jots something down into a notebook.
THERAPIST
Well, Rebecca, next time you see this monster, why don't you
tell him to leave you alone?
REBECCA
No!
THERAPIST
Why not?
REBECCA
(Whispering)
He'll kill me.
THERAPIST
But, you said he never threatened you.
REBECCA
No, he hasn't...
THERAPIST
Then, how do you know he'll kill you?
REBECCA
(Whispering)
Because he killed them.
THERAPIST
Who, Rebecca?
She stays quiet.
THERAPIST
Rebecca?
REBECCA
(Quietly)
They were chopped to pieces...
THERAPIST
Who was, Rebecca?
REBECCA
(Quietly)
They were left in the basement...next to it...
THERAPIST
Next to what? Who?
REBECCA
(Quietly)
Then, they were burned.
THERAPIST
Burned? Who, Rebecca?
REBECCA
(Quietly)
Then, they covered it up.
THERAPIST
Covered what up, Rebecca?
REBECCA
(Whispering)
The door.
cut to:
INT. HOUSE - DAY
Janet and John are still sitting on the sofa.
JANET
I wonder how their session is going.
John shrugs
JOHN
I don't know.
They're silent. A clock can be heard TICKING in the background.
Janet stands, and stretches.
JANET
I'm going to go make lunch.
JOHN
Okay, what are we having?
JANET
I don't know...how about some pizza?
JOHN
Okay!
JANET
Okay, then.
She walks into the kitchen. She opens the freezer and
pulls out a pizza. She examines the instructions on the box, opens it,
and places the pizza in the oven. She sets the oven to 400 degrees.
She checks, the time, then walks back into the living room.
JANET
I'm making sausage.
JOHN
Cool.
The silence continues, uncomfortably.
cut to:
INT. CREED CAR - DAY
Paul is driving Rebecca home. They are both quiet.
cut to:
INT. HOUSE - NIGHT
Paul and Janet are sitting in the living room.
PAUL
Well, looks like I'm not going to the hardware store today.
JANET
You can always go tomorrow.
PAUL
Yeah, you're right.
Janet puts her head on Paul's shoulder.
JANET
Is something actually happening, Paul? Do you think the
house is really haunted?
Paul strokes his wife's hair.
PAUL
I don't know...I don't know...
fade out
There are birds CHIRPING.
fade in:
INT. HOUSE - DAY
Sun is streaming into Rebecca's room. She is sleeping.
Her door opens, and Paul enters. He walks over to
Rebecca, and shakes her.
She awakens, and looks up at her father.
REBECCA
Daddy?
PAUL
Yeah, I'm here.
REBECCA
Daddy?
(screaming)
He's behind you!
Paul spins around, and the corpse is indeed standing right
behind him, ax in hand. The room darkens.
Corpse
I told you not to open the door.
The corpse raises the ax, and starts hacking Paul to
pieces. Rebecca witnesses this all, when suddenly the corpse starts a
fire using hacked pieces of Paul. The fire is next to the door, which is
swinging open.
cut to:
INT. HOUSE - NIGHT
Rebecca bolts upright in her bed. She has a petrified
look on her face. It was a nightmare.
She gets out of bed and runs out of her room. She runs
downstairs, where Janet and Paul are still sitting on the sofa, Janet with her
head on Paul's shoulder, crying.
REBECCA
Mommy! Daddy! I had a really bad dream.
Paul twists his head, then beckons her toward him.
PAUL
Come here, honey.
Rebecca runs over to Paul, and puts her head on his
shoulder. Rebecca starts to cry.
fade to:
INT. HOUSE - DAY
Paul, Janet, and Rebecca are all sleeping on a bed.
Rebecca between Janet and Paul. Paul awakens, and gets out of bed without
disturbing Rebecca and Janet.
He walks downstairs to the kitchen, opens the fridge, and
pulls out a carton of orange juice. He pours himself a glass, takes a
banana, and sits down at the kitchen table.
He drinks his orange juice, and eats his banana. He
looks thoughtful. He throws his banana peel away, when Janet enters.
JANET
Good morning.
PAUL
Good morning.
Paul walks to the coffe maker, and starts coffee. Janet
toasts an english muffin, then they both sit down at the table.
JANET
How'd you sleep?
PAUL
Could've been better. You?
JANET
I slept okay. I feel bad for Rebecca.
paul
Yeah, I know what you mean.
The toaster dings. Janet gets up, takes her english
muffin, then sits back down. She eats in silence.
Rebecca enters.
PAUL
Hi, honey. How did you sleep.
REBECCA
Good.
PAUL
Good. Why don't you have a bowl of cereal.
REBECCA
Okay.
She goes a cabinet, and pulls out a box of cereal. She
takes a bowl down, and pours the cereal. She then takes milk out of the
refrigerator, and pours it into her cereal. She takes a spoon, and sits
down at the table. She starts eating in silence.
PAUL
I wonder how John is doing?
JOHN
(O.S.)
I'm doing fine.
John enters.
JOHN
(Cont'd)
I can actually move my arm a little bit.
PAUL
Hey, that's good!
JOHN
Dad, are we going to work on the basement today?
PAUL
Well, I have to go to the hardware store...
REBECCA
Do I have to go into the basement?
JANET
No, dear, you don't have to.
PAUL
(Cont'd)
I have to go to the hardware store and pick up some
paint. Then we need to rip up the wallpaper downstairs. Maybe you
can help by throwing it away.
JOHN
Okay, that sounds good. Can I come with to the hardware
store?
PAUL
Yeah, sure. Hey, I think the coffee's done.
fade to:
INT. CREED CAR - DAY
Paul is driving John. They are both quiet.
INT. HARDWARE STORE - DAY
Paul is looking around in the paint section.
JOHN
Hey, Dad, how about this paint?
John points to a can of white paint.
PAUL
How much is it?
JOHN
Ummm...
John examines the paint.
JOHN
(Cont'd)
$4.85
PAUL
Hey, good deal. Okay, get three cans.
JOHN
Ummm, I can carry one can.
PAUL
Okay, I'll carry the other two.
cut to:
INT. HOUSE - DAY
John and Paul enter with three cans of white paint.
PAUL
Janet! We're home.
JANET
(O.S.)
Okay! I'm in the kitchen.
Paul and John walk to the kitchen. Janet and Rebecca
are sitting at a table.
PAUL
Like the paint?
JANET
Yeah, it's...white.
PAUL
Yeah, I thought we might as well keep it plain.
JANET
Yeah, good idea.
PAUL
Well, better get started sooner then later.
JANET
Yeah, okay.
Paul and John leave the kitchen, and head downstairs through
the basement door.
INT. HOUSE BASEMENT - DAY
Paul and John enter.
paul
Oh! I should go get a light bulb, and the
fixture. I'll be right back.
Paul puts his two cans of paint down and runs back
upstairs. John sets his down right next to the other two cans, stands and
waits.
Paul enters, holding a box with the fixture, and a lightbulb.
paul
Okay now...
He reaches up to the ceiling, untwists the old bulb and puts
in the new one. He then pulls the string.
The light flickers to life. With the light on, the
basement seems almost larger, and the wallpaper far uglier. Paul beams
with delight with the light.
He opens the fixture box and pulls out the light
fixture. He then screws it into the ceiling, around the light. The string
dangles down through the fixture.
PAUL
We should install a switch.
JOHN
That'd be cool.
The ax is still sitting up against the wall. The washer and dryer seem much more dirtier in the light. The floors of the basement are concrete.
paul
Now, for the fun part.
Paul walks up to a wall and runs his hand across
it. He discovers an edge to the wallpaper, and pulls on it.
It comes off easily. He pulls some more, and some more. The walls underneath the wallpaper are green. He gets to the washer and dryer. He stops pulling, and pulls some scissors from his pocket. He cuts the wallpaper off the wall at that point, and put them in the middle of the floor.
paul
Hey, John. Can you take care of those for me?
JOHN
Yeah, sure.
John, using one hand, picks up the wallpaper. He heads
upstairs.
INT. HOUSE - DAY
John enters through the basement door. He walks into
the kitchen, wallpaper in hand. Janet and Rebecca are still sitting at
the table, playing a game.
JOHN
Mom, where should I throw this away?
JANET
Ummm, how about in the back? There's a trash can back
there.
JOHN
Okay.
John opens the back door, and exits.
EXT. HOUSE BACKYARD - DAY
John walks across the backyard, and puts the wallpaper in the
large trash can. He then walks back inside.
INT. HOUSE - DAY
John enters. He walks back through the kitchen, and
back downstairs into the basement.
INT. HOUSE BASEMENT - DAY
John enters, Paul has succesfully moved the washer and dryer into the center of the room. He is tearing more wallpaper.
Paul begins tearing where the door is. However, the
wallpaper gets stuck. He pulls and pulls, and finally he pulls so hard,
it comes off.
It's there. The door. It stands, ominous, foreboding. No outside handle, and green paint splattered across it.
PAUL
What's this?
Paul runs his hand across the door.
PAUL
I wonder if I can get it open.
He starts to push on it.
JOHN
No! Dad, wait.
Paul stops.
JOHN
(Cont'd)
Remember what Rebecca said? "Don't open the door".
Paul walks toward John.
PAUL
You think she was talking about this door?
JOHN
Well, what other door could she have been talking about?
PAUL
Go get your sister.
JOHN
Okay.
John runs back up the stairs.
INT. HOUSE - DAY
John enters, and runs to the kitchen.
JOHN
Hey, Rebecca. Can you come downstairs?
Rebecca shrugs, and Janet and her follow John downstairs.
INT. HOUSE BASEMENT - DAY
Rebecca, Janet, and John enter. Paul is standing in the
middle of the room.
JANET
I see you got the light working.
Paul nods.
PAUL
Hey, Rebecca, come here.
Rebecca walks toward him.
PAUL
Is that the door?
Rebecca walks toward the door.
REBECCA
It's the door.
PAUL
You said that we're not supposed to open it, right?
REBECCA
(Whispering to herself)
Don't open the door.
paul
Rebecca?
Rebecca walks away from the door.
Rebecca backs even furthur away from the door.
REBECCA
(Quietly)
Don't open the door.
PAUL
Rebecca?
Rebecca turns around, and runs back up the stairs. Paul
runs after her. Janet and John look at each other, then go up the stairs.
INT. HOUSE - DAY
John and Janet enter, Paul is holding onto Rebecca, trying to
comfort her.
PAUL
Rebecca, honey? What happened? What scared you?
REBECCA
(Whispering)
I saw them.
PAUL
Who did you see?
REBECCA
(Whispering)
I saw him.
PAUL
The monster.
REBECCA
(Whispering)
Derek...chopped to pieces. And...and..burned!
PAUL
Derek? Who's Derek?
Rebecca looks at Paul.
REBECCA
(Whispering)
My fiancé. We were going to get married
tomorrow. I came over...they had been chopped to pieces...by him.
PAUL
By Derek?
REBECCA
(Whispering)
I don't know why he would do it. He looked at me...then
he laughed...and put the ax in himself...It was horrible, I ran out of the
house.
PAUL
Then what did you do?
Rebecca is silent.
PAUL
What did you do next?
Rebecca looks at Paul
REBECCA
Daddy, I'm scared.
PAUL
I think we need to open that door.
REBECCA
No, Daddy! We can't open the door.
PAUL
Why not? I think if we open this door, all of our
problems will go away.
REBECCA
No, Daddy! Something bad will happen.
PAUL
Okay, honey, I won't open the door. I'll just paint over it.
REBECCA
Yeah...just paint over it.
Paul releases Rebecca, who walks into the living room, and
sits on the sofa.
JANET
What was that all about?
PAUL
I don't know, but I won't open the door. I guess I'll just paint over it.
John walks into the other room and sits by his sister.
PAUL
Well, better get back to work.
Janet nods, and Paul walks back downstairs.
INT. HOUSE BASEMENT - DAY
Paul enters, and picks up a paint brush.
Paul begins painting over the door. A low RUMBLING sound can be heard, then stops. Paul looks around for the source of the noise, shrugs, and continues painting.
Beat
He turns around and TRIPS on the paint can.
PAUL
Dammit.
He picks the paint can back up, as paint spreads across the
floor.
He dips his brush back into the can, and resumes painting
over the door.
The painting touches the ax, soaking the edge of the blade.
Paul turns back around, and notices the ax. He sets his
brush down, and walks slowly toward it.
He picks it up, and looks at it. He then looks at the
door, and walks toward it.
John enters
JOHN
Hey, Dad...what are you doing?
PAUL
Ummm
Paul looks at the ax in his hand, as though he's never seen
it before.
PAUL
(Cont'd)
Good question.
Paul leans the ax back against the wall, then picks it up
again.
PAUL
Maybe we should put it in the shed?
JOHN
Okay...anyway, I came down here to ask you if you wanted
lunch.
PAUL
Sure...I'll be up in a minute.
John nods, then runs back up the stairs.
Paul looks at the ax again, then sets it down. He then
clicks off the light and walks up the stairs.
INT. HOUSE - DAY
Paul enters from the basement, and shuts the basement
door. He walks over to the kitchen. Janet, Rebecca, and John
are all there.
PAUL
What are we having for lunch?
JANET
Leftovers.
PAUL
And what might that be?
JANET
(Shrugs)
Well, we have some pasta here from the other night...
PAUL
Okay, sounds good.
JOHN
Dad, did you put the ax in the shed? I didn't see you
go out there.
PAUL
(Hesitantly)
I was going to. Just after lunch. I am a bit
hungry.
JOHN
Okay.
Janet warms up the pasta in a microwave, then sets it on the
table. They then hungrily dig in.
PAUL
(While eating)
Just as good the second time around.
JANET
Don't talk with food in your mouth, dear.
Paul glares at Janet, and then swallows the food hard, and
pronounced.
PAUL
(Angrily)
Fine, then, I won't.
JANET
Is something wrong?
PAUL
(Calmly)
No, nothing's wrong.
JANET
Okay.
They finish the rest of their meal quietly. When
finished, Paul places his plate in the sink, and walks back to the basement.
INT. HOUSE BASEMENT - DAY
Paul steps down the stairs, and walks back to the door.
He begins painting again.
INT. HOUSE - NIGHT
It's late. Paul and Janet are sitting on the couch,
Paul with his arm around Janet.
PAUL
I got a lot done today.
JANET
Good.
He is combing his hand through her hair.
PAUL
Hopefully, I will be finished painting tomorrow.
JANET
That's very good.
There is a short, awkward silence. The only light
on in the house is the living room light. It is eerie.
JANET
Well, I think I'm going to go to bed.
PAUL
That sounds good, I will too.
They both get up, and Janet goes upstairs, as Paul shuts off
the living room light. It is pitch darkness, and very quiet.
A CRASH is heard.
Beat.
PAUL
Ow!
JANET
You alright, Paul?
PAUL
Yeah, just bumped my knee on the table...
cut to:
INT. HOUSE BASEMENT - DAY
Paul is painting, across from the door. He looks toward
it, then forces himself back to painting. He is painting with a purpose
now, slapping the paint harder and harder upon the wall.
By not paying attention, he gets paint in his face.
PAUL
Dammit!
He throws the paintbrush at the floor. He wipes the
paint off his face with his sleeve, then turns around. He walks up to the
door, and feels the cracks in the door. He then kicks it, and retracts
his foot in pain.
PAUL
Ow!
JANET (O.S.)
Paul? Are you alright?
PAUL
Yes, I'm fine.
Janet starts WALKING down the stairs.
JANET (O.S.)
You sure, honey, you sound...
She enters, and stares at Paul's foot. It has blood all over
it, and on the door.
JANET
What did you do?
PAUL
I'm sorry, honey, but I had to see what was behind this door.
JANET
What did you do to your foot?
PAUL
I kicked the door...
JANET
And that happened?
PAUL
I guess...
JANET
What were you doing anyway?
PAUL
I told you already! I wanted to see what was behind
this damned door.
JANET
I'm sorry...
Paul sighs.
PAUL
It's not your fault. I'm just upset is all.
JANET
I can see that.
PAUL
I'm going to get something to drink.
Paul walks up the stairs, as Janet looks at the door.
cut to:
INT. HOUSE - DAY
Paul is drinking a glass of water near the kitchen
sink. He doesn't finish the glass, so he dumps the rest of the water down
into the drain, setting the glass in the sink.
REBECCA
Daddy?
Paul turns around and looks at his daughter.
REBECCA
What happened to your foot?
Paul looks down at his foot. It is still bloody, and is
apparently bleeding onto the floor.
PAUL
Daddy hit his foot on the door.
Rebecca gasps.
REBECCA
(Slowly)
It's not..."the" door, is it Daddy?
Paul seems to contemplate this for a minute.
PAUL
No, just the front door.
REBECCA
You're lying to me, Daddy, aren't you?
Paul looks down at his daughter, eye to eye.
PAUL
Daddy's not lying to you honey. Daddy would never lie to you.
REBECCA
(Screaming)
You are lying, Daddy! Why are you lying?
Rebecca walks up to her father, and starts to kick him.
Janet enters.
JANET
(Yelling)
Rebecca! Honey, stop it!
Janet runs up to her daughter, and pries her away from Paul.
JANET
What is wrong, Rebecca, honey? You can tell Mommy.
Rebecca points to her father.
REBECCA
(Whispering)
He lied to me.
Janet looks up at Paul.
JANET
You lied to our daughter?
Paul looks at Janet straight in the eye.
PAUL
No, I didn't.
Janet walks up to Paul and slaps him across the face.
PAUL
What the hell was that for?
JANET
Don't curse in front of our daughter!
PAUL
I'll curse whenever I damn please!
Rebecca starts to cry. Janet turns to soothe her, as
Paul washes the blood off his foot.
PAUL
Where's John?
JANET
(Angrily)
Why do you want to know?
Paul walks over to Janet and yanks her on her feet.
PAUL
Because he's my son!
Janet jerks her arm away from Paul.
JANET
What is your problem, Paul?
Paul glares at her, then stalks off, blood still leaking from
his foot.
cut to:
INT. HOUSE - DAY
John is sitting on his bed, playing his
video game. Paul slams the door open.
JOHN
Dad? What's wrong? What happened to your foot?
Paul walks toward his son.
PAUL
We must get that door open, John.
JOHN
Why? I thought it was evil, or something.
PAUL
No...I'm sure there is a treasure behind it, something behind it. I need
to know what is behind it. You can help me.
JOHN
Mom won't like this.
PAUL
Don't worry about your mother.
JOHN
(Slowly)
Okay.
Paul and John exit the room, and they walk downstairs.
Paul leads John directly to the basement door.
INT. HOUSE BASEMENT - DAY
Paul and John enter. The bloodstain is still on the door, and Janet is on the other side of the basement, painting.
PAUL
(Angrily)
What are you doing?
Janet turns around, and looks at him.
JANET
I'm painting. It needs to get done, and it's a great
stress reliever.
PAUL
(Angrily)
Well, go! Me and John will paint.
JOHN
Dad, what's wrong?
PAUL
(Angrily)
Nothing is wrong!
JOHN
Well...I thought you said we were going to open the door...
PAUL
(Very Angrily)
Dammit, John!
Paul shoves John down on the ground.
PAUL
(Angrily)
Why did you need to say that?i
JOHN
I thought mom knew...
JANET
Paul! Stop it!
PAUL
(Angrily)
No! I need to know what is behind the door!
Paul grabs the ax, and starts hacking at the door. It still bounces off, but he keeps hacking.
Janet grabs his arm, and he slaps her on the face again.
PAUL
(Angrily)
Dammit, woman! Can't you leave me alone?
JANET
(Pleadingly)
Paul, stop!
Paul hits Janet on the head with the back of the ax.
She falls like a sack of potatoes, bleeding from the head.
JOHN
Dad! What'd you do that for? Dad...Dad!
Paul hacks John with the ax. He then turns back to the
door, and hacks at it crazily.
REBECCA
(Fearfully)
Daddy?
Paul looks over at the stairs. Rebecca is standing there, a small gun in her hand. She looks very scared. He gazes deeply into her eyes, then drops the ax. He then puts out his hand.
PAUL
(Sorrowfully)
Give me the gun.
Rebecca shakes her head, then begins to cry.
REBECCA
You killed John...and mommy...
She breaks down in tears, and falls to her knees. Paul
goes to comfort her.
PAUL
(Soothingly)
It's alright...
He coaxes the gun from her hand, and puts it to his head.
PAUL
(Sadly)
It's alright.
fade out
A SHOT is heard. Then Rebecca is heard screaming.

EXT. HOUSE - NIGHT
The house still sits there, unchanging, foreboding.
Rebecca's screams are heard, then stopped. A light rain drizzles.

INT. HOUSE BASEMENT - NIGHT
Rebecca is sitting over her dead father's body. She
looks up, and a corpse is standing there.
REBECCA
Why did you do this to him?
CORPSE
The door mustn't be opened, Rebecca.
REBECCA
Why?
The corpse grins.
CORPSE
It must remain closed. Forever.
The corpse stops grinning.
CORPSE
Now go, Rebecca. And tell no-one what happened here. If
you do...
Rebecca has already run off. The corpse grins again,
then walks to the door, opens it, and steps inside.
