Chapter 13 Part 2
He knew that he was opening up to her and that scared him but when he looked into her eyes and saw the honesty he knew he had to. "Before I got into Nsync I met this girl, Cara. She was just...wow. We were friends for 2 years before she became my girlfriend a few months before the guys and I left to tour Europe. She was my everything. I planned my days around her so I could find the perfect time to call. I bought her a cell phone just so I could call her wherever she was and I thought that that was what she wanted. She told me that was what she wanted. The guys tried to warn me but I was just too blinded by her."
"Warn you about what?" she asked still looking him in the eyes.
"None of them liked her. They said she gave them a bad vibe and they were right. Cara hated them, especially Lance. I don't know why, it was just weird. But I loved her. I actually loved her. I was so stupid."
"Why were you stupid for loving her?"
"She was using me. She had some other guy on the side, Scott. Together they planned a way to...to basically seduce me and use me for the fame that I was going to achieve. Cara was not only using me but my family as well. She actually went to church with my mom. When I was away she said that my mom kept her company when she was lonely. One time my mom saw her with Scott but when she asked her about it she said that they were just really close friends. She believed her, I believed her. I called her one night and I told her that I loved her. I used those three words that meant the world to me. I had never said them to anyone outside my family and when I said then to she...she laughed. I was pouring my heart out to her and she was laughing over the fact that I said I loved her. It still hurts me when I remember that night. I was hurt but I thought it was my fault that she thought I was kidding or something. After we said good-bye, my phone rang again. I thought maybe it was her calling to tell me she loved me back. As soon as I answered the phone she started talking about me and laughing. I didn't know what was going on until she started laughing.
"Can you believe this, he actually said he loved me, Scott! I was trying not to laugh but it was just to... funny. He was so serious like telling me that would be some great thing or something. Our plan is finally working. From everything that boy tells me they are huge over in Europe. Do you realize how much money he is making? I can't wait until he comes back.  I have a feeling we will be going shopping." Cara said laughing.
"Justin I'm not going to say that I'm sorry for what she did to you but I'm going to say that I'm sorry for the shell of a person she turned you into." she said reaching over and hugging his crying form.
"When I...I look at you, you remind me of everything that I have learned to hate. There is something about you that just...just brings back memories of Cara. And although I'm trying I can't bring myself to push them aside and be open with you. It's not that you look like her it's the way you can control things and make everyone around you trust you. You walk into a room and everyone feels completely comfortable with each other because you are there. It scares me to think that if I open myself up you might turn out to be like Cara."
Everything had just been cleared up for Mackenzie. He had shut her out because of what this girl did to him. He was horrible to her because Cara had caused him to close up on the world with her childish games. She thought of everything that had happened between them and truth be known he had never hated her. He felt that if he opened up to her she would hurt him like he had been hurt in the past. At that moment she decided that she would do what ever she could to make him trust her and see her for what she really was.
"I'm not going to pity you, Justin because you have too much for me to feel bad but I'm going to make you see that I'm not like her." she said hugging him once more.
He slowly placed his hand on her back and gave into her touch, "Thank you, Mackenzie."
He pulled back and smiled when he saw the phone he had given her next to the bed. "That could make a good song, I guess." he said with a laugh.
"Yep, definitely." she said smiling as the phone rang.
"Hello?" she said into it
"Yes, Mr. Martins. Tomorrow? Are you sure?  I don't think I'll be able to dance. Couldn't we reschedule it? Ok, yes...tomorrow morning at 9...yeah. Ok then. Bye."
"You're performing tomorrow! Why didn't you tell him no? You're in no condition to dance." Justin said protectively.
"I can't tell him no and I'm not dancing. I have to do it." she said turning her phone off.
"You don't have to do it and I'm calling him and telling him no!" he said picking up the phone.
"No! No...Justin...you can't. If he knows you are here he'll be so mad at me. I don't even want to think about what he would say.  If I don't do it then everything will be pushed back and that won't work. I'm recording with you guys Tuesday and Wednesday so I need those days free. Thursday I have a lot of promotional stuff during the day and then Friday is my...my prom." she said saying the last word quietly.
"Your prom?" he asked
"Yeah...see if I would have continued in high school I would of graduated this year instead of getting all those tutors. Friday is the day that well would have been my Senor prom so I asked some old friends and I'm performing at it. I can't let them down now. Everyone would hate me. Being an up coming pop star you miss out on things. I've never been to a prom."
"Tell me about it. That's cool that you get to go to it though, I was only in high school for 1 year so I never really made my mark as a student. Most people don't even know I went there."
"Yeah right" she said quietly
"What?"
"Nothing...Hey you know what?"
"What?"  He asked
"You should come with me." she said excitedly, "You know, as friends." she added
"Really? I don't know. Are you sure?" he asked
"Of course I'm sure. It would be fun. I'll be singing most of the time but still."
"J, we got to get going." Nick said coming into the room
"Ok. We'll figure out details on Tuesday." he said smiling. "Bye, Kenz. I won't see you tomorrow but I'll call. Don't let Martins make you do anything you think you can't do." he said reaching to hug her. "Thanks for everything, Kenzie." he smile and walked to the door
"Wait!!" she called after him. "I want to give you this. Read it later and tell me what you think." she said ripping a page out of her notebook and handing it to him.
"Bye Kenz." he said smiling
Mackenzie signed happily and leaned her head against the pillow. This was how she wanted things to be between them and it was finally shaping out to be a great friendship.
