If you were to examine *NSYNC's first music video("I Want You Back") and compare it to something like the more recent "Pop," you would have an instant understanding of just how far this group has come since they first got together. You would get a sense of how they have grown creatively as well. Interestingly, their first video actually played a large role in their decision to add synchronized dance movements to their act in the first place. "We knew we needed to shoot a video demo to send out to record companies," says Justin, "and we said, 'Well, we can't just stand on the stage, we should give them a show.' So that's where the choreography came in. We got some choreographers that JC and I had worked with on the Mickey Mouse Club."
Right from the beginning, Joey points out, the guys have played a major role in deciding what their videos should basically be about. "I like doing our videos," he says with enthusiasm, "and a lot of our ideas have gone into them. For 'I Drive Myself Crazy,' I came up with the idea of being insane. Everyone wrote their own little stories about how we got crazy. It's dealing with breakups with girlfriends and driving themselves crazy because they loved the person so much."
That sense of collaboration continued through their other videos, and really became apparent when they shot the exciting footage designed to support "Bye Bye Bye."
"We wanted to do something like Mission Impossible," says Joey. "JC came up with the idea for the video, then everybody had their own little thing to add. It's great to see an idea come from somebody's head, then it goes on to a piece of paper, then on to storyboards and then it's shot. Wayne Isham, who directed it, came up with other ideas, like the revolving room. We incorporated our ideas with the director's ideas and it came out pretty cool."
Chris thought that "BYe Bye Bye" was a "dude" video. "It's got everything in it that guys like: trains, cars, chicks and dogs," he points out. "That's exactly what we wanted. Well, I don't know about trains. Cars, chicks and dogs we like — trains were thrown in because me and Joey didn't have anything to do. You know, 'Ah, throw 'em on a train.' Great idea. I was scared to death."
And even this was not far out enough for the guys, who went even more elaborate with the video for "Pop." As Isham told MTV, "It's the biggest thing I've ever worked on. That's ehat the guys wanted. They wanted something with size, scope, scale and fun. I couldn't wait to get the guys on the set to see their faces when they climbed up this 40-foot ramp of neon, up to this 35-foot-high sculpted stage that their on top of. Some of the dancers we had to safety-wire to the ceiling so thewy wouldn't fall off." Adds Chris, "We come up with the concepts all the time. We like to do it. If we fall on our face, at least we know it's us falling on our face." As to the future, all five members of *NSYNC believe that they can achieve virtually anything they can imagine.
"What we've discovered with our videos is that there's no limits to what we can accomplish," says JC. "We don't think with boundaries anymore. Our minds have opened up completely. Whjen we think of videos now, we think outside the box. When you first start, it's always, 'Oh, wow, we can film a party scene,' but once you're in it, you see that there are no boundaries, thanks to the computer graphics and things like that. It takes it so much futher. If you can think of something, you can make it happen. So then it's challenging yourself to knid of create something crazy."
