Undying Devotion Chapter 8
"Thanks alot." Erika politely told the man, as he handed her the package.
She was at work, but the delivery man brought it right up to her desk. Confused, she asked Sarah for a knife.
"I have scissors, will that work?" Sarah said apologetically.
Erika nodded, thanking her as she took them. Once she had the box open, she looked inside, and saw the only thing in it was another box, only it was very small.
Reaching inside, she pulled it out, and studied it. She opened it carefully, and pulled out a beautiful ring, with a small diamond, and looking at it, she saw
that the inside of the band was inscribed. In tiny
letters, it said "I love you, always and forever. JC + Erika"
Sliding it on her finger, she instantly forgave him. Not because he'd bought her a gift, but because he'd taken the time to do something special to say he was sorry.
Fumbling with her keys, Erika finally separated the car key from the rest. As she turned it, she felt someone's arms slide softly around her delicate waist.
It startled her, and she dropped her purse, and jerked her head to the side to see who it was. His blue eyes met her stare, and she breathed a sigh of relief.
"JC, don't DO that, you scared me."
"Sorry. So are you still mad at me?" he replied.
Shaking her head, she got into the car, then looked up at him, smiling gently.
"No, and thank you." she told him, glancing down at the ring on her finger.
"Anytime." he said, meaning it.
"Would you like to come over?" Erika continued.
JC agreed, and kissed her goodbye, before retreating to his jeep. The couple sat down on the couch in Erika's living room. Grabbing the remote, she turned on the
TV, and switched it to MTV. "I Want You Back..." were the first lyrics the two of them heard. She giggled softly at the sight of her boyfriend, and the rest of the guys, on the old video. JC didn't, he only looked at her, and thought of how those words perfectly
expressed how he was feeling.
He was with her, in body, but in spirit, something was definitely missing. That spark, that fire, that always drew everyone to her. It was gone. But he knew that it was still there, somewhere deep inside. There had to be
SOMETHING that would bring that back. And he had to find it. She was the girl he wanted to spend his life with, and that couldn't happen if she never really
came back to him. Suddenly, his beeper went off, and JC looked down at it, then asked to use the phone. Erika nodded, and looked back at the TV. A few minutes later, JC walked back into the living room.
"Mom wants to know if you want to come over tonight, for dinner. Do you?" he
asked her.
"Sure, I haven't seen them since.... for a while." Erika answered him.
JC knew what she meant. She hadn't seen his family since the funeral. But the
thought was too painful for her to even say. As he looked at her, he could tell that that fleeting thought was pulling her even further away from him, distancing her even more. Her eyes slowly closed, and her face tensed up.
The silence was unbearable, so he quickly intervened, "Okay, well we better get going then."
Erika opened her eyes, and gave him a look of thanks, standing up and following him out the door.
