Undying Devotion Chapter 3
A blood-curdling scream tore through the darkness, and JC immediately knew it was Erika. He was so frightened as he ran down the hall that he had goosebumps. Throwing the door open, he looked up to see Erika laying down in bed, crying and screaming and shaking violently. He ran to her and threw his arms around her trembling body.
He gently shook her awake, cooing, "It's just a dream baby, just a nightmare."
As she woke up, Erika stopped screaming, but the tears started to flow freely down her cheeks. JC pushed her silky hair out of her face, feeling beads of sweat on her forehead.
"Why, JC? Why did God have to take them away from me?" she whispered, burying her face in his chest.
"I don't know, sweetheart," was all he could tell her as he pulled her close.
Then he just held her and rocked her back to sleep. It had been 2 days since her parents were killed, and JC hadn't left Erika's side. He had even
been staying the night with her, so she wouldn't have to be alone. He couldn't bear to leave her when she needed him most. Now, after waking up to her screaming, and seeing how much pain she was in, it hurt him to know he had to leave her when morning came. But the guys needed him, too; they were recording songs for the latest album. He lost himself
in his thoughts, and fell back asleep.
As Erika opened her eyes, the sunlight pouring in the window was so bright, she pulled the blanket
back over her face. JC was gone; he had to go to work, and she was alone. She knew he had been trying so hard to help her, but she just didn't know how to put what she was feeling into words. It hurt to know that she
was hurting him by pushing him away, but it was just so painful to talk about it. She felt the tears start to well up in her eyes, and she couldn't fight it. In fact, every waking moment of the past 2 days had been nothing but tears and agony. JC was her soulmate, she loved him so much and had always been able to tell him anything. Until now. But then again, she'd never felt grief that cut so deep. The day passed slowly, each agonizing hour crawling by. Finally, as the sun was going down, Erika decided to go outside. Pulling on a big jacket, she stepped out onto the porch. Even through her coat, the cold December chill was biting at her. She sat down on the porch swing, and quietly began to swing back and forth, staring off into nowhere. Her memory drifted back to a time when she was young. She had spent countless evenings on this rickety old swing, gazing at the stars with her mom and dad. Her daddy would point out constellations to
her and her mother, and she would sit between them, listening to their stories until she fell asleep. Then her dad would carry her to bed and tuck her in. Suddenly, the sound of tires on gravel interrupted her daydreaming. Wiping the tears from her eyes, she glanced up to see JC getting out of
his jeep. Erika put her hands back into her pockets, and smiled weakly at him.
"Aren't you cold out here?" he asked her, concerned.
Erika shook her head as JC sat down next to her, placing a hand on her leg. Then he wiped a tear from her cheek. "Erika, babe, do you wanna talk to me?" he begged. Erika just shook her head again and looked down at her shoes.
He continued, "The funeral's tomorrow, do you know what you're gonna
say in the eulogy?"
"I think I'll just talk about my favorite memories of them," she choked out quickly, turning her eyes away from him.
He couldn't handle it anymore. "Come on, Erika, look at me! I've been trying
so hard to help you, because I love you more than anything, but you won't let me! You always said you could come to me for anything, so why DON'T you?!" he exploded.
Bursting into tears, Erika pulled away from him and ran for the door. "I hate you! YOU DON'T understand what this is like! How could you EVER help
me?!" she screamed at him and stepped inside, slamming the door in his face.
