A Battle with Death Chapter 2

Lance walked over to the one girl and sat down to talk to her. When he sat down she seemed to smile some. Not much was really said between the two of them while they talked, but that didn't matter, it was just nice for someone to talk too other than the nurses. Lance talked with her, and found out her name was Bree Nicole Benavidez, and that she has been there for close to two years. She was diagnosed with Acute Lymphatic Leukemia just over two years ago, and got steadily worse, so she had to be put in the hospital. Her and her mom are very close, and she comes by as much as she can with her two younger siblings.

After about two or three hours, Lance had to leave, even though he didn't want too. He loved talking with Bree, and seeing her smile. He promised he would be in as much as he could to see her. Bree just smiled even more at the thought. After the guys all left it was nap time.

Two of the nurses helped get Bree back to her room, and into her bed. She had to be de-germ from everything. Once she was in bed, and resting ok, the nurses went to get everyone else in bed. One by one all the children, and young adults were put into their beds in the different wards to sleep. It took a lot of energy, but they did it!

That night Bree started to go down hill. Just after 9:00 o'clock pm, Bree stopped breathing. At 9:45 pm Bree had her first seizure. At 11:03 pm Bree had her second seizure. At 12:45 am Bree had her last seizure of the night. At 1:15 am the nurse went in to Bree's room to check on her, and her catheter bag had blood it in. They had to remove the catheter and put a second one in, that seemed to fix the problem ... for then anyways. Over the remainder of the night, the same thing pretty much happened, Bree was always having problems. The next morning when her mom came in, the doctor had a private talk with her.

"Ms. Benavidez, your daughter had a very rough night. She had three separate seizures last night, and stopped breathing. We also needed to changer her catheter bag as well. This morning she went in to have more tests done. Blood counts showed that her white and red counts are below the danger, and so is her hemoglobin and iron count. You daughter needed to have a blood transfusion again, as well as a bone marrow transplant. Because your daughter has a rare blood type, there is not that much marrow available. If you daughter does not get this transplant, she will die."
