RESEARCH
This page has information relating to research projects that NSWPAR members have participated in.
1. OUTCOME & COST ANALYSIS OF PHYSIOTHERAPIST MANUFACTURED TEMPORARY PROSTHESES
June 2005 to June 2007
NSWPAR decided to analyse the use of plaster-of-paris temporary prostheses, with the purpose of determining whether these devices are safe and effective in the training of lower limb amputee gait. There is little in the literature describing outcomes and efficacy of plaster temporary prostheses, and at the time of the study they were used only in NSW.
The research involved no change to current practices, but rather involved formalising data collection within current practices, including all models of post-operative care, stump management, and rehabilitation programmes. The group aimed to collect data on a minumum of 100 amputee clients across multiple settings, and data collection running from June 2005 to June 2007. 5 centres in the Sydney metropolitan area and Wollongong were involved in data collection. As of writing, results were yet to be looked at comprehensively.

2. INTERIM PROSTHESIS PILOT TRIAL
Feb 2006 to 2008
A pilot trial of prosthetist-manufcatured interim prostheses was initiated by the Artificial Limb Service (ALS) as part of the response to the guidelines published in 2004. The trial was carried out at Westmead Hospital & Rankin Park Hospital.
