SAMHAIN CRAFTS

    Samhain Tree

There are so many different things you can do for a Samhain tree. Start by decorating your tree with little effigies of witches and black cats. If you can't locate any ornaments like these, purchase Halloween greeting cards with different covers. Cut out the pictures and fasten them to posterboard for stability. Cut a small hole in the top and hang them from different branches with black and orange ribbon.

Most craft and dime stores now sell "Halloween" lights in the shape of little jack- o-lanterns. String these lights as you would "Christmas" lights. Instead of ribbons, beads, or garland, drape your tree in fake spider webs. Cover the entire tree. Remember, the more you stretch the webs out, the more realistic they look. Attach little plastic spiders into the web.

The little tissue ghosts you made as a child look fabulous on a Samhain tree. Gather two white tissues per ghost. Lay the first tissue out flat. Roll the second into a tight ball and place in the center of the first tissue. Gently squeeze the first tissue around the ball in the center. Tie it off with a thin black ribbon. With a felt pen, draw a little face on your ghost. Hang them from the branches.

For an interesting and unique Samhain tree topper, purchase a costume witch's hat. Simply set it over the top of your tree.

    Cauldron Candles

    Required Items:

    Container of clean sand

Wax (paraffin, beeswax, or left over candle bums)

    Candle wicking

Small Cauldron or item to make desired imprint like a jar or piece of fruit

    Scissors

Coffee Can or Heat Resistant Jar

    Preparing the mold:

If using a paper box, line with plastic. Moisten sand with water, enough so that it can keep it's shape when pressed. Press cauldron into sand, not too deep, you want the top of cauldron atleast flush with the top of the sand. Also, try to maintain about one inch of sand around each cauldron. Carefully remove cauldron, not letting any loose sand particles fall inside. Make as many molds as space allows. Using your little finger, or the unsharpened end of a pencil, press into the bottom of each mold three times, to make little legs. Try to keep them the same depth, and evenly spaced, otherwise you will make lopsided candles!

    Preparing the wax:

Put the wax into a coffee can or heatproof container in a pan of water, and bring water to a boil. Caution...NEVER LEAVE MELTING WAX UNATTENDED, HOT WAX IS HIGHLY FLAMMABLE! If you would like to add colour, try adding crayons to the melting mixture.

    Preparing the wick:

While the wax is melting, add the wicks to the molds by pressing the wicking directly into the sand at the center of the mold. Allow the top of the wick to drape over a pencil or chop stick to keep from falling into the wax when it is poured.

    Pouring the wax:

When the wax is completely melted, pour into molds slowly.

    Finishing:

Once the wax has hardened, scoop the candles out to the sand. Trim the excess wick, and brush off any excess sand. There will be some sand in the wax.

    Making a Besom Broomstick
Choose a wood for your handle that has protective properties
    Ash (protection, prosperity, health),
    Birch(traditional) (protection, binding, purification),
    Elder (binding, protection, healing),
    Dogwood (wishes, protection).

After you have gathered your wood, determine the length of handle that would best serve your needs.

Next, gather straw, as it is easily obtained, and attracts fairies. The straw can be dyed (using herbal dyes) at this point if desired. If you decide not to dye the straw, dampen it, as this will make it much easier to work with.

The traditional binding for a magickal or Witch's broom is a Willow branch, so you may need a few branches. Prior to cutting the straw, gather it so the ends are even, and pointing towards the top of the handle, and evenly distributed around the handle. Begin binding with the willow branch.

You can add personal touches such as carving the handle, or tucking lavender in binding.
