Psi Chi's Purpose

"To encourage, stimulate, and maintain excellence

in scholarship of the individual members

in all fields, particularly in Psychology,

and to advance the science of Psychology."












About Psi Chi & Psi Chi at NSU


Psi Chi Northwestern State University Chapter in Natchitoches, Louisiana maintains approximately 30 members that have dedicated their studies to psychology or related classes and sciences. The current officers of this chapter are: Melinda Cortez - President, Julie Freyou - Vice President, Nanya Stamper - Secretary, Nicole Bourgeois- Treasurer, Josie Covington - Ft. Polk Representative. Our faculty advisor is: Martha Smith.

Membership in Psi Chi is an earned honor which is for life. A permanent record of your membership is preserved at the Psi Chi National Office and may be used for reference purposes such as applications for graduate school and jobs. Psi Chi requires it's members to maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0, and to join to have had at least 15 hours of psychology courses and that your major or minor study is in psychology. Membership in Psi Chi not only recognizes your scholastic achievement but also your interest in psychology. Psi Chi is a member of the Association of College Honor Societies and is an affiliate of (APA) American Psychological Association & (APS) American Psychological Society.

Founded in September 1929, Psi Chi has grown to be one of the largest honor societies in the United States with over 940 chapters. The NSU chapter of Psi Chi was founded on January 08, 1969. The NSU chapter of Psi Chi also maintains and extends membership at the Ft. Polk satellite campus in Ft.Polk, Louisiana. For more information on Psi Chi visit the National Homepage.

Requirements are:

Psychology major or minor

GPA of 3.0

psychology GPA of 3.0

have completed 45 credit hours

have completed 15 hours of psychology courses (or 12 hours completed, 3 hours enrolled

Applications are available in Martha Smith's office in Bienvenu Hall

They are due by March 31, 2003
