Camping Basics
The following items are some Girl Scout camping basic supplies.  Some are needed and some are optional. This is indicated on each item.
DISHBAG *NEEDED
A dishbag is a necessary camping item on nearly every campout.  It consists of 2 loosly woven dish cloths (wash rag size) sewn together on three sides.  On the top, (the open side) weave a shoe lace through around the perimeter of the bag.  The shoelace should be very long like 48" or more.  Use an old thread spool or a large button and put the two lace ends through it.  Then simply tie the ends of the shoelace together.  Fill dishbag with UNBREAKABLE cup, plate, bowl, knife, fork & spoon.  All items should be marked with your name or be very distiguishable.  If this is too hard or you don't have enough time to make one, you can purchase a lingere bag at your local dollar or department store & it can be used the same way.  Once at camp, when the dishes are washed they are not wiped dry, they are put into the dishbag and hung on a line to drip dry.
Sleeping Bag / Bedroll *needed
At every camp out you will need a sleeping bag and pillow.  If you don't have a sleeping bag, use 3 blankets or conforters.  Roll these up in a similar fashion as a sleeping bag and tie with shoelaces, rope, or bungee cords.  At every Girl Scout camp, they have Mattresses for you to put your sleeping bag on.  Most cabins have bunk beds but some have just the mattresses that are laid on the floor.  If your camping at a campsite other than a Girl Scout camp, you may need to bring a cot, blow-up air mattress, or foam mattress.  It is best to call ahead and check this detail out.
Sit-upon *optional
A sit-upon is a nice item if you are planning alot of outdoor activitiy at your campout.  It is especially nice for sitting around the campfire.  It can be made in many diffrent ways, one way is to cut two pieces of vinyl into matching squares about 18" on each side.  Lace the two squares together with vinyl lacing and just before you are ready to close the last side stuff with polyester fiberfill.  Then close the remainder of the sit-upon and use a scrap piece of vinyl to make a name tag which can be attached with a spare piece of lacing.
Wishy-Washy kit *optional
This is an optional item only if you prefer to bring your toiletries in your own toilet kit.  A Wishy-Washy kit is made from a large sized butter dish with holes punched around the edges about 3/4ths of an inch apart.  A "sleeve" of fabric is sewn to match the diameter of the dish and the finished tube measures about 8" in length.
At one end, either weave a shoelace through the open edge of the fabric or fold the fabric down 1" and sew into place leaving a small opening to thread a shoelace through.  On the other end of the tube, sew the fabric tube to the butter dish using yarn, vinyl lacing or heavy thread.  Fill with washcloth, soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, & other toiletries as needed.  This is useful for rough camping because you can empty the kit & fill the bowl with water for washing your hands & face or brushing your teeth.  Also, it ties onto the outside of your backpack without taking up valuable room on the inside of your backpack.
