What you need to be a Girl Scout Leader
*Enthusiazim for working with children *Honesty in money matters. *Fairness in rule setting *Stong Character when dealing with people *Time ( 3-5 hours per week ) *Willingness to be fully trained *Good communication skills to relay information *Sense of Humor *Sense of Patriotizim *Well rounded person.
First year Leader's must agree to complete training within the first 90 days which includes 2 classes. The first is called New Volunteer Orientation (NVO) and the second is called Basic Training (Daisy, Brownie, Junior, Cadette, or Senior Basic). You are also asked for references and Girl Scouts will complete a reference & background check. This is done to insure that our girls are safeguarded against any known threat to their personal saftey. The Orientation (NVO) takes place first and is a three hour class. Once this occurs, you may begin to meet with your new troop. Within 90 days, you must complete the Basic training course for your level of girls. These classes are free and scheduled periodically throughout the year. Also, a bank account for your troop must be established. Either you will be given an existing one or a new account will need to be opened. Troop leaders are to keep records of all purchases made with their troops money & at the end of the year, will be asked to complete a financial report.
This outlines the "nuts & bolts" part of being a Girl Scout Leader
And now, on to the fun stuff!
Girl Scout leaders are offered many other additional classes just for fun! Most training classes are free, but some of the enrichment classes carry a small supply fee. You will receive a book that outlines the course selections. In the spring, there is a registation for a leader's only camp out in the fall called "The Great Escape" which is the best time you'll ever have camping & a chance to get away from it all for a couple of day's. Leader's & their daughters are also invited to attend an annual Leader / Daughter Camp to spend some one-on-one time with your daughter (which is usually why people volunteer). Leader's are asked to attend a monthly Leader's Meeting which is held the last Monday of the Month (generally) which is set up to keep you informed & motivated throuout the year and also to help discuss ideas with other leaders. This binds us together so that we may become a more effective Neighborhhod. If you become trained as an Outdoor Program Facilitator (OPF) or a First Aider (FA) then you may be asked to assist your troop or other troops as they go on outings or campouts. It is customary that your daughter may accompany you on the trip. OPF's handle the camp upkeep & facilities you use while at camp & also are in charge of firebuilding & knife saftey. FA's are in charge of medical information while on outings & handle all the band-aids & boo-boos.

Occasionally, when in the role of leadership, problems arise that you will have to deal with. Either a money issue or a complaint from a parent or some other thing. It is important for you to use your most diplomatic people skills to resolve such issues. The Neighborhood Service Unit Director is there to help with issues that come up as you carry out your duty's. If a situation does occur, you are not alone in handling the problem, you have much support. Please feel free to call or Email your NSUD at any time. In addition to that, we have a Cluster T Director, Philomena Pittoli 734-675-7367, who is also available to mediate diffrences as they occur. Further, we have a Manager of Membership & Marketing (MMM) Tonya Cooper 1-800-326-0309 ext.262 who is our liason to Council and can serve as a conduit between the volunteers and the many deparments of our council.
Stuff happens, but your not alone!
One more meeting to go to!
Once a month, you are expected to attend a Leader's meeting. Ours are held on the last Monday of each month at 7:00 p.m. at Shumate Middle School in the library. They last about 1 hour and there is no child care. If you can not make the meeting, please arrange for your co-leader to attend or a reliable parent to attend on your behalf. A representitive from your troop is needed at each meeting. Occasionally the date will be changed for a meeting. You will be made aware by checking the Leaders Link page on this website, also by Email and by phone if necessary. All troops are added to the leaders Email list and we ask that if you do not have Email, please recruit someone in your troop who does who can call you with the information when they receive it. At most meetings we need to collect money for something or take a count for something else, so try to always be prepared with your troop checkbook on hand and a list of your girls in your pocket.
Girl Scout Communication works like this: COUNCIL gets the information to the Marketing Specialist The MS gets the information to either the CLUSTER DIRECTOR or the NSUD The NSUD gets the information to the LEADERS The LEADERS get the information to the TROOPS and to the PARENTS
