Tobago - Aug/Sept 2001

We spent 2 weeks with Neal's parents, Laurie and Thelma on their yacht, Clarion, sailing along the West Coast of Tobago. We started out in Store Bay, then gradually worked our way up the coast, stopping off at Mnt Irvine Bay, Castara, Englishman's Bay and Man O' War Bay. We also travelled by bus to experience the "bustling metropolis" that is Scarborough! We took HUNDREDS of pictures, and have tried out best to narrow them down. Hopefully this page will give you some idea of the incredible time we had in Tobago!

Refuelling in Barbados - Sunshine here we come!

Feet washing after a dinghy trip ashore

An incredible Toucan at a restaurant in Store Bay.

Scarborough - the Capital "city"

A house built on stilts - common construction in Tobago

Enjoying the wonderful yachty lifestyle!

One of the magnificent sunsets we experienced every evening

Galley staff - sweating it out to keep the crew well-fed and happy!

Fishermen trading in Mnt Irvine Bay (a similar scene can be found daily all over the island

Bait fish that swam around Clarion every morning. The water was so clear you could see the larger fish lurking below them, ready to strike

Clarion's cockpit

"Liming" (i.e. chilling) island style

Pulling up the anchor

Exploring Castara Bay and Village - only madmen like us would venture out in the midday sun!

Wall of a local guest-house and bar! Spoil-sports!

Shopping Island-Style - milk, bread etc from a little "supermarket"....

...and fresh produce from a street vendor

Every evening produced a sunset more beautiful than the last...

Anchored at Englishman's Bay

Bamboo that grows to an incredible height

Looking out over Englishman's bay. Clarion anchored furthest from the beach.

Glorious breakfasts of freshly picked mangoes and home-made yoghurt. It doesn't get better than this!

Local fishermen cleaning out their boats on Sunday morning.

A beautiful little beach we had all to ourselves in Man 'O War Bay.

Finding the coconut was easy. Getting it open was another story. Looks a little like a scene out of "Survivor"!

Snorkelling close to the shore. We spent many hours mesmorized by the magnificent sea life along the coral reefs all along the coast of the island. It was my (Alison) first experience of snorkelling and I can truly say that I'm addicted!

As you can tell - the sunsets were a highlight of the holiday!

The main street of Charlotteville - a lovely little village in Man 'O War Bay

Dad in his new "car". A zippy little Caribe dinghy.

Neal sewing a breeze-buster (goes over the hatch to incrrease circulation of air in the yacht) on Mom's manual Singer sewing machine.

Yachties buying their weekly supply of beer direct from the wholesalers. As close as you'll get to door-to-door service!

Man 'o War Bay

Self portrait before...

...jumping in the Dinghy...

...and heading back to the yacht.

"Rush" - a South African Yacht anchored nearby.

As we sailed back to Store Bay - some dolphins payed in the water around the boat.

They swam right in front of the boat, just below our feet - beautiful to watch.

Pigeon point - the only private beach on the island.

Alison basking in the beauty and just "liming" in the water.

Can you spot Mom hiding among the palm trees?

Going ashore in evening wear can be challenging.

Pictures from half-way up the mast (compliments of Neal)
