Course Description: A flat out and back course.
Distances: 40km for everybody except Juniors, Men 65+ and Women 55+ ride 20km.
Road Surface: Mostly good with a few bumps.
Gearing: Considering last years wind bring a really big gear for the tail wind section and bring a small chainring unless you're really a stud.
Facilities: Porta Cans at registration.
Weather: Moving the race to June should lessen the chance of serious wind and also make the temperatures warmer. Everybody should be done before any serious heat though.
Feeding: N/A
Rules Specific to this race: Of course there is no drafting in time trials.
Race Advice: Not much to say here. Go fast, turn around and go fast some more. If it's windy though you'll need to think a little more. If you get a headwind on the way out you can race with more abandon on the way out because you'll have the tail wind on the way back. If you get a tail wind on the way out you need to be careful that you don't take too much out of yourself before the difficult journey back.
You'll find that on windy days the tail wind splits are fairly close together, but the head wind splits vary quite a bit. That's where the race is won and lost.
Last year it took me 40 minutes to ride the first 20km and 20 minutes to ride the last 20km. My 53x12 was not big enough for the return trip. Also riding at 40mph at times on a TT bike with some gusts from the side was pretty scary! Lots of riders like to set up their TT bikes with just a single chainring. On windy days like we had last year that can be a big mistake. Besides the obvious lack of a smaller gear for the head wind, you can end up in a cross over situation with your chain and risk dropping the chain when you hit bumps.
Specific advice for women racers: Women should certainly be aware of the need for a small chain ring if it's windy.
Lodging: Lodging is available in Davis (Motel 6, Ramada, etc.) and Dunnigan.
