One More Step: Part 3

Chapter 3 - Over a Cup of Coffee

Nick held the caf door open for Sara and closed it behind him. These 24- hour caf's that had been opening up all over Vegas were a lifesaver for the CSI's. They sat at a corner table and a waitress soon brought over their coffee.

"You wanna tell me why you were so scared?" Nick asked, watching Sara stir her coffee ceaselessly. She looked at him and shook her head.

"You scared me. That's all. Really, I'm fine. Just I was remembering all the times where one of us has been atacked. I didn't have my gun on me and I thought I was gonna end up like Holly Gribs." The colour was slowly returning to her face and she sipped her coffee.

"That's not it Sara. You're a horrible liar," Nick responded, smiling, "There is something else."

"You know I hate violence against women cases Nick. That and forgetting my gun in the Tahoe made me really scared." The finality of her tone made it clear that she didn't want to discuss it any further. Nick gave up, knowing Sara Sidle could be the most stubborn person in the world. They began to talk about more neutral topics, like the football game Nick was planning on watching on the weekend and how Easter was soon.

"Well, that's 30 minutes. Let's get back to the scene." Sara said, leaving some bills on the table for the waitress and putting on her coat. Nick shook his head.

"You're too dedicated to this job beautiful," he said with a laugh.

They climbed into the Tahoe, Nick in the driver's seat and Sara leaning on his shoulder. He purposely drove slowly, trying to take as much time as possible to get to the scene. By the time they pulled up to the scene, the coroner's van was there and the body was being taken out.

"Hey Cat!" Nick called as Catherine descended the stairs from the door, "You done?"

"Yeah Nick. Got everything. Hop back in that vehicle and head to the lab. Sara, you're fast. There wasn't much for me to collect that you hadn't already!"

Sara smiled at the compliment, "Thanks Cath. " she called out her window. Nick hopped back in the SUV and pulled Sara into a passionate kiss.

"What was that for?" she asked smiling.

"You see," Nick said with a grin on his face, "I like the fact that I can do that whenever I want and you won't hit me!"

She kissed him again and said., "You know I wouldn't have hit you, even before we were together. I was totally head over heels. Whenever you leaned over my shoulder, I could barely talk!"

He smiled at the compliment and started the engine again. They drove off onto the dark street, both singing loudly at a song on the radio. Nick was still puzzled about Sara's reaction though. What had scared her so much. He knew she wouldn't say, so he decided to find out for himself.
