Selection Criteria

  The Nova Scotia International Tattoo is a world class event and as such it demands that the performing acts are of the highest possible caliber. Cadets who tryout for membership on the Display Team must expect to meet a high standard of Dress, Drill and Deportment, have a positive attitude, be self motivated, hard working and handle stress.

  Cadets that meet the eligibility requirements and who tryout for the Cadet Display Team will be selected based on:
  • how positive an attitude they have
  • how self-motivated they are
  • how sharply and properly they execute Drill movements (as per CFP 201)
  • how good their uniform is
  • how well they handle stress
  • good attendance

The Drill Movements that cadets will be evaluated on include:

  • Attention, stand at ease, stand easy;

  • Left, right and about turn at the halt;

  • Right Dress;

  • Paces Left and Right;

  • Paces Forward and to the Rear;

  • Open and Close Order;

  • Salute to front, left and right;

  • Marching and Halting in Quick and Slow Time;

  • About turn on the march in Quick and Slow Time;

  • Left and Right Turns on the march in Quick and Slow Time;

  • Left and Right Inclines on the march in Quick and Slow Time;

  • Left and Right Form Squad; and

  • Wheeling left and right in Quick and Slow Time (in fours, in twos, and in single file)

In evaluating cadets, Display Team staff will be looking for not only how  sharply a drill movement is executed, but also how properly a drill movement is carried out.

Cadets who constantly move and look around will not be considered for participation.

It should be noted that the arms will be swung waist high (as per the CFP 201) when marching in quick time. Unfortunately a number of cadet units still insist that cadets march shoulder high. This is not proper and not acceptable for a group in a show of the caliber of the Nova Scotia International Tattoo.

In evaluating the uniform, the Display Team staff will be looking for:

  • a proper haircut;
  • a clean shaven face (male cadets);
  • the proper wearing of jewellery;
  • the proper placement of badges;
  • how clean, well pressed and wrinkle free the uniform is;
  • how lint free the uniform is;
  • how sharp the creases are and that they are in the proper places; and
  • boots that are shone to a high gloss

It is important to note the following uniform standards:

  • the entire boot is to be shone and not just the toe;
  • hair must be a "natural" colour;
  • hair is to be cut as per the current dress regulations for cadets (mushroom cuts are NOT acceptable)

It cannot be emphasized enough how important a positive attitude is.
