| Statistical information pertaining to the Armenian genocide has been very difficult to gather. Members of the Ottoman military and government have been very hesitant to release estimates of the number of deaths they caused. The highest number given by any such person is 500,000. However, the former-members of the Ottoman government after the establishment of the Turkish Republic have said that the actual number of deaths is 800,000. The victims of this, the Armenians, say that these estimates are very modest, and pale in comparison to the real number of deaths, which they say to be 1.5 million people. The Ottomans could very well be shrinking the number to make themselves look less guilty, while the Armenians could be increasing the number to make themselves look like the victims they really are. |
