Job Description: Reference and Education Services Librarian, Assistant Professor

STANDARDS FOR PROFESSIONAL PERFORMANCE

  1. Demonstrates a knowledge of information systems and ability to apply this technology to departmental goals and procedures.

  2. Demonstrates a thorough knowledge of unit routines and procedures, conducts statistical and other studies, and recommends policy and procedural changes which will result in more efficient procedures.

  3. Demonstrates a thorough knowledge of information retrieval through knowledge in the broad disciplines, and expert knowledge in the subject specialties.

  4. Demonstrates competence in developing and implementing small group education sessions for faculty, staff, students and community-based individuals.

  5. Shares responsibility with Director for Reference and Education Services for coverage of the reference desk and implementation of small group educational sessions.

  6. Demonstrates knowledge of the inter-relationships of Reference and Education Services with Collection Development/Access, Interlibrary Loan/Learning Resources Center, Technical Services, and Systems divisions of the Library.

  7. Demonstrates a thorough knowledge of the goals, collections, services, personnel and procedures of an academic library.

  8. Represents the Library to all Library patrons and colleagues.

  9. Promotes library programs within the medical center.

  10. Demonstrates a thorough knowledge of the academic medical center and health professional community with emphasis on the need for and use of information in this environment.

  11. Has a positive attitude toward reference work. Is competent in the techniques of the reference interview, has the ability to weigh reference questions as to immediacy, scope and need, and forwards questions to another source if necessary.

  12. Demonstrates awareness of the resources of other University and community libraries and considers resources and collections before recommending items for purchase.

  13. Demonstrates accomplished oral and written communication skills.

  14. Demonstrates proficient editorial and educational skills.

  15. Is understanding and sympathetic towards employees and considerate of the values, attitudes, and needs of each individual.

  16. Attempts to learn from his/her own errors. The Librarian should be tolerant of others� mistakes.

  17. Interprets library regulations and policies in a uniform and just manner so that all patrons and staff receive equal treatment. The Librarian should protect the rights of employees and offer general support.
