PRIMARY PURPOSE:            Be a viable, productive member of the HPD Library team.  As an important team member, perform whatever task or function required to meet the needs of patrons.  Ensure access to information resources and maintain library book shelves, photocopy materials, maintain interlibrary loan files.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

 

1.       The first priority of all members of the HPD Library team is to serve the HPD Library

and the HPD faculty, students, and patrons.  Therefore, team members will not be limited by this job description in an effort to assist our constituency, but will perform whatever tasks are assigned by supervisor(s).  Team members will be readily available, visible, and accessible to faculty, students, and patrons.  If unable to answer an inquiry, the team member will insure that the patron is assisted by another member of the HPD Library team.

2.       Supervise work/study students and patrons during evenings and weekends.

3.       Direct reference inquires, as necessary.

4.       Perform functions at the Circulation Desk which includes helping students check out and

      return materials to the library and handling telephone inquiries.

5.       Stock photocopying machines with paper and troubleshoot copier problems.

6.       Sort and shelve returned reserve materials and used books and journals in library proper; read and maintain reserve shelves.

7.       Receive incoming interlibrary loan requests, and help to maintain interlibrary loan delivery file cabinet.

8.       Notify patrons of receipt of interlibrary loan.

9.       Help to process miscellaneous materials such as newsletters, university catalogs, etc. and looseleaf updates.

10.   Provide coverage for absent personnel, as necessary.

11.   Perform other duties as required.

 

MARGINAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

 

  1. Maintain work area in a neat and orderly fashion.
  2. Assist the Director and other library staff in special projects as required.
  3. Participate in NSU Libraries staff workshops.

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  1. The ability to orally communicate effectively with others, with or without the use of an interpreter is necessary.
  2. The ability to communicate effectively in writing, using the English language, with or without the use of auxiliary aids or services is required.
  3. The ability to work cooperatively with colleagues and supervisory staff at all levels is required for the position.
  4. Familiarity with National Library of Medicine call numbers and health professions terminology is desirable.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

 

  1. The incumbent may be exposed to short, intermittent or prolonged periods of sitting or standing in the performance of job duties.
  2. The incumbent may be required to accomplish job duties using various types of equipment and supplies including but not limited to, calculators, computer keyboards, telephones, writing utensils, etc.
  3. The incumbent is required to transport oneself to other campus offices, conference rooms and other off-campus sites.
  4. The incumbent must be able to lift up to 25 pounds.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

 

  1. A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  2. Attention to detail.
  3. Good organizational skills.

 

OTHER PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

 

  1. Some college is preferred.
  2. Work experience in the medical field would be beneficial.
  3. Some library experience is desirable.
