Big Tips for NSU OT Students

If you're preparing for the OT Boards, go to my new section on this topic.

Buy this book when you enter OT school--it'll provide an excellent review for your coursework: National Occupational Therapy Certification Exam: Review & Study Guide. Yes, it'll help prepare you for the boards, too.

Don't wash your NSU OT lab jackets in bleach! It'll turn the red and black NSU patch to a yucky pink and brown NSU patch. I wash mine with the whites in the regular washing machine and send it to the dry cleaners (about $4) once in a while. I've heard that hair spray removes ink; gotta try that sometime...

Year 2 Research Class: when picking a topic to research, remember that you will be interviewing 2 people for your research study, so choose your research topic accordingly. In other words, don't pick a research topic like "OT for people who have been abducted by UFO's," because it'll be doubtful if you can find 2 UFO-abducted survivors to interview! Also, Dr. Finlayson has an amazingly-detailed marking criteria sheet for every assignment; ask her for a copy of it so you can see point-by-point how she is grading each assignment.

Do what Dr. Reba Anderson says-- review your class notes immediately after class (means less cramming time before exams)

10-10 Phone Rates.com great site, compares rates from state to state, within a state, international rates, tips on how to choose a 10-10 plan, Q & A, and more. I would also recommend checking out the pre-paid calling cards sold at gas stations--you can get great U.S. & international long-distance rates using them, and you won't have to worry about forgeting the time and talking beyond your budget 'cause it'll let you know when you have a few minutes left on the card.

Compare the prices of local phone companies for your local phone service. For example, I use Supra Telecom instead of BellSouth. Not only was I able to keep the same phone numbers, but my monthly bill was a few dollars cheaper--even though I was getting additional phone features such as voice mail, call waiting, etc.

Studying old Anatomy & Neuroanatomy exams-- don't memorize the answers, understand them

Write up the bibliographic reference in APA style for your textbooks and keep it handy by your computer or in a Word file (to copy and paste) so when you're doing a research paper, you won't be constantly re-typing them

When making photocopies, shrink the image to 77% or so and choose 8 ½" x 14" paper so you can copy both pages of the book at the same time--half the cost & half the time

When making photocopies, place a bookmark on the first page & start copying from the last page to the first page so you won't have to re-put the pages in order when finished

Don't worry, there are OT jobs out there. After all, there is a crying need for our holistic, caring profession. However, because most people and most employers don't know about OT or what it is, they don't head their job ads with "Wanted, Occupational Therapist." If you look carefully through the newspaper want ads, you'll find at least a dozen positions that are in our scope of practice and clinical background. Wendy Brooks, class of 2000, showed us this in the Sunday edition of the local newspaper.

Always keep your resume and curriculum vitae (cv) up-to-date. It's a miserable process to try to recreate past dates, workshops, and clinical experiences. If you don't have a resume or cv, plan on setting aside at least 15 hours to write one from scratch. You should also have both a resume and cv, and they should be in more than one format (pdf, webpage html, scannable format, printout on good paper) so you will be prepared for anything.

Have a question about your client's medications? Ask the expert--a pharmacist. Dr. Earlywine and the rest of the pharmacy staff at the NSU Pharmacy Clinic, (954) 262-4550, can research and answer any medication question you have.
