The Grand Canyon is the most visited park in
the state of Arizonia. The North Rim and South Rim of the
Grand Canyon are about 10 miles apart as the crow flies. It is about
a 4 hour trip by car, 215 miles of mountain driving. The South Rim
is around 7,000 feet above sea level and the North Rim is 8,000 feet above
sea level. During the winter the North Rim is usually under
several inches of snow and park roads are not plowed so the North Rim is
usually open from May - November. The South Rim gets some snow but
park roads remain open year around.
The Grand Canyon is the World's most spectacular example
of water erosion. The 277 mile long Canyon was cut by the Colorado
River. The Canyon walls show sediment rings, fossils and ripple marks.
Palenontologists are able to read the Canyon walls like a timeline.
