nowhere publications was born in 1994, through the conception of 'beneath the dirt'.

'beneath the dirt' was conceived late one night under flourescent lights; over a muddy steaming sink; within the mind of an aspiring writer.  Where do I publish my work?  He concieved of a magazine, where writers new to the field, unpublished and prehaps a little rough around the edges could have their work printed, allowing them exposure, and the encouragement to keep with their creative expression.

Several advertisments and two months later, there was enough material to publish the first issue.  It was distributed throughout cafes in the Wellington region.  Having a print-run of only 300 issues and being free, it disappeared rather quickly.  The rationale behind the magazine being free was the belief that money coloured artistic expression and it was not part of the artistic process, naturally artists need to be paid for their work, but when monetary gain becomes an impetus the art becomes tainted.  Looking back I doubt this would have been a problem for any of the people submitting work to btd.  On the other hand, having thought about charging a small fee for the magazine I couldn't be bothered with the logistics of it all.   The second issue, published at the end of that year, had a rather larger run of 600, it disappeared just as quickly.  Response had been good, and issue three, ready about six months later.... failed to ever make it to the photocopier.

Since '95 both projects have remained dormant.  Now, five years later, the desire to resuscitate the project has arisen.  With the advent of the internet as a generally accessible medium, it was decided that 'beneath the dirt' would become an electronic publication, with the possbility of printed issues also.

nowhere publications has lived up to it's name.  Wellington, Wanganui, Havelock North and Christchurch have all housed it at some stage, and it is probable that the next issue of btd will be compiled in Japan.  Where it wanders... only time will tell.
