Before you read these pages it is important, at least to me, to remind you that the Nowans are not my attempt to model a perfect society. Certainly there are elements that reflect my personal tastes but personal taste always gives way to my goal of modeling a coherent society and culture. I have attempted to model Nowan society in a way that is realistic. Realistic, in this case, means in the manner of actual primate societies (including but not limited to Homo sapiens). I have also felt free to borrow liberally from Bonobo, Chimpanzee and Gorilla societies.
Thus the Nowans will, as a society, do things I find
distasteful and I do not apologize for that. Every living
society does things I do not like or admire and my goal is to
make the Nowans as 'living' as possible.
I will occasionally refer to articles in journals as well as
to expeditions and events. Unless otherwise noted, you may
assume that all citations are real if they occur in a real
journal, i.e., a citation from Science will refer
to a real article, not one that I invented. Non-Nowan references
involving real historical figures reflect real timelines and as
much as possible, the contact with Nowans is realistic in tone,
time and place.
