"Random Thoughts and Sporadic Happenings"

HEU. Well, the hospital strike has finally come to a close, and the union people still aren't happy. Apparently, "the union sold us out." Now, the person that I am, I'm not very political unlike my counterpart from The Commentary. I don't keep up with what's happening in Ottawa or Victoria very much, I don't know what's Paul Martin up to and for the most part, I don't really care. The same applied to this strike - like many other strikes - I didn't pay too much attention....that is, until it affected me. I work part time at UBC Hospital, and I saw the picketers outside, but basically ignored them.

Silly Gordo.
Then, it happened. My paycheques stopped coming through because the Finance Department at VGH where my cheques get cut, went from a department of 50 to a department of 2, and those two people were too busy sanitizing hospital tools and what-have-you (because those support workers were outside with their placards), and frankly did not have the time to process my pay. Then this week, I don't even go in to work, because the people who would come in for the study I work on, can't, because the hospital support staff are not there to draw their blood and perform the psychometric tests. Boo.

Summer is here. As I weakly continue my hunt for a co-op work term, I do not grow desperate, per se, but I am discouraged. I have had three or four interviews thus far to no avail, I still have three or four outstanding applications that I have not heard back from . . . Summer school starts next Tuesday, and I don't find a job between now (Thursday) and then (Tuesday), it seems unlikely I will be working this summer. Maybe it's time for to just finish my academic work, and call my B.A. a day. We'll see how things go, but I do know that the co-op fees are going up as of September to $600 per work term. Maybe I'm better off just looking for "real" full-time work on my own. I have a reasonable amount of experience behind me, I've developed a number of skills, and I'm sure I can be valuable to any number of companies. Indeed, I've applied for a Quality Assurance job at Electronic Arts. We'll see how that goes.

Oh Gordon Campbell. Well, politicians in general. First Gordo gets away with a DUI offence, and then Svend Robinson gets away with theft...stealing something equivalent to the value involved in grand theft auto. Maybe that's why I'm so apathetic to the "needs" of our politicians. I had a conversation with my parents the other day, and the more we think about, politics should get "better" in the next 20 years or so. The vast majority of people around my age, little older, little younger, will be an educated voting public. Most of us will have received some form of post-secondary education, be it a B.A., a B.Sc., some diploma program at BCIT or whatever. We know things. We are the next generation of not only voters, but politicians as well. Maybe even my fellow UBCers, Darin Wong and Joseph Planta, both politically minded, will duke it out head to head in Ottawa some day. Heck, Darin is already in Ottawa.

Some people can't shut up about their cars. I might be a little guilty of that, but I'd be more guilty of talking about other people's cars and what from that car I can put on my car, and other thoughts of that ilk. Most people close to me know that I'm a pretty heavy poster on Clubintegra.net, a local Integra discussion forum that also has members from our neighbours to the South, Germany, Ontario and other places. Apparently, I'm the resident "post-whore" and "ricer" on that board. Modding cars is an interesting endeavour. On the one hand, it's a blast if you have the cash to use. There's something for everyone. For the people big on looks, you can build up a pretty heaty looking car with a body kit, carbon fibre hood, and bling-bling rims. For people big on performance, you can easily drop several thousand dollars under the hood so you can rip it up at Mission Raceway or at the autocross track (keep it on the track folks, and off the streets). For people big on sound, it is easy to dump paycheque after paycheque on a new subwoofer, amplifier, capacitor and all that good stuff. Me, I can't decide. I want it all. But at the same time, on an intellectual level, I know that it is a waste of money. Every thing you put on your car depreciates the moment you buy it. What can I say?

Friends. I'm watching the series finale as I write this, Monica and Chandler are in the hospital with their surrogate mother. I'm not going to ruin it for everyone else who hasn't watched it yet. Chandler and his wittiness..."What hurts more, giving birth or getting kicked in the crotch?" Joey and his lovable stupidity. Ross and his aloof intellectual ramblings. Monica and his quirky obsessive-compulsive anality. Phoebe and her strange and mysterious, yet hilarious past. Rachel and her "ahem." It's hard to believe that this series is drawing to a close. The concept of a sitcom seems like it's on its way out, with reality TV taking its place. Too many American Idols, Survivors and Average Joes have taken the place of our Friends, Seinfeld and Frasier. But Simpsons is still kicking! Well, I"m rambling, so this piece ends now....Ok, that's just an excuse, I just want to watch the finale.
