Celtic Costuming, Warfare and Culture

First off, I want to emphasize I am not an expert by any means. I do some light research and I'm in a Celtic Myth and Legend Class, but compared to many of the sites out there that see something swirly and go "Ooh! Celtic!" I hope I can be a little more helpful. The information in here was taken from historical books, Celic literature, and reputable-looking websites (that's where most of the shadyness comes in, but I try). Where possible, I site sources because I want this to be good.

Much of the Costuming and Armory are done with Dagorhir, a quasi-roleplaying group that dresses up in funny clothing and hits each other with foam weapons, in mind. It's really fun once you try it. So the term armory is mostly refering to what you can make out of PVC piping and camping mats. This is the closest many of us will get to real Celtic warfare so perhaps you should try it. I do talk about what the Celts would really have used when I can.

Keep in mind that the Celts were a culture that lasted thousands of years and occupied Gaul, Breton, Wales, Ireland, Turkey, Spain and other fun places. I'm making major generalizations. American styles vary by season and city so obviously in a survey we couldn't really talk about the fashions of our founding fathers as the same as today. Unfortunately, the Celts weren't quite so well documented as we are and also I'm not sadistic and therefore am not going to find out what the Celts were wearing in the Spring of 322 bce in the Dublin area as opposed to the 23 ADers in Gaul. Just keep that in mind.

Finally, if you see something you think is wrong historically, LET ME KNOW. I am trying to be accurate and it doesn't help if you just huff at my lack of knowledge and move on. Let me know where I screwed up and give me sources so I can fix it. Thanks! Celtic Weapons and Warfare
Resource for what sort of weapons the Celts used, their designs and style of warfare. Emphasis on weapons for Dagorhir.
