Guppies belong to a large family of fish known as Poeciliidae. They are also called 'millions fish' because guppies can have numbers of offspring in a very short period of time.  A female guppy can get pregnant at 2 to 3 months at age.

Females are usually longer and larger than males. Males have more striking colours and patterns and often have longer fins.

The main attraction of guppies is that their propensity to breed in captivity.  The male anal fin is used to fertilize the female internally.  When gravid, the females take on extra body depth and a dark area appears around the vent.

Once they get pregnant, female guppies are almost always pregnant even without the presence of males. They can get pregnant by storing sperms from a single previous mating.

However, young guppies might become snack for the adult guppies. To avoid this, it is best to give pregnant female her own tank in which to give birth
