About Novagen Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Academy

NovaGen started with Micah and his brother Ivan seeing the success of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu players in the 'No Rules' fighting arena. They had both been involved in Kung-Fu for some years and Micah had reached 2nd Dan in Shun Wu Tang Kung-Fu. But they saw how complete Brazilian Jiu-jitsu was as a martial art and imported a series of Instructional Videos by Royce and Rorian Gracie. They started training Brazilian Jiu-jitsu together in 1997 and gradually more and more people became interested and a class started coming together. Today, Dr. Micah Atkinson, is the highest ranked Brazilian Jiu-jitsu player in South Africa and has a class of over 40 students. NovaGen also boasts having the most number of ranked Jiu-jitsu players training regularly... Abdul Hassan, Dr. Mark Armbruster, Ivan Brittain and Penny Thomas (the first female in South Africa) all hold blue belts in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.

We DO NOT tolerate the use of brute strength or force in training. We have a strict policy when it comes to members being injured during training, thus forcing our students to rely more on the techniques that they have been taught to submit their opponents. We believe that this will encourage our students to have a very tight and technical game, giving them an advantage over those who rely on their strength alone.
