He walked down the pier. She was sitting on the dock, tips of her toes resting in the lake waters.

Did she see him? He didn’t think so – but then he caught her eyes.

They diverted quickly.

He stepped down the creaky boards that extended in her direction, hand resting on the rail so as not to lose his balance. The boats and jet-skis banged against each other, straining against the thin ropes. The sound was much more audible then his breath, which he’d been concentrating on.

She looked up again when he reached her.

No names needed to be spoken. They knew who each other were.

They’d only read each other’s words. Never seen the face behind them.

But they knew.

FLASH . . .

He walked down the aisle, pushing his way through the crowded kids.

He paused in front of her, looking down at the golden-brown head.

"Can I sit here?"

A paper airplane flew out of the window.

"No."

He fell back a step.

FLASH . . .

"There’s someone here to pick you up."

She paused in her dance, spinning to face the other girl. Her skirt rustled around her feet.

"Who is it?"

Her mind raced with thoughts.

Was it him?

"I dunno. He’s really fine. I’d go see."

She shoved her way through the dance floor, leaning hard on the gym doors until they opened.

He was leaning against a bench, face turned towards the sky.

The door slammed with a loud creak behind her.

He flicked his gaze over to her.

She looked at her feet.

"Hi."

"Hi."

FLASH . . .

She could feel him breath.

He could feel her breath.

The stars swirled overhead, creating a celestial myriad of colors.

They breathed together.

FLASH . . .

The flashing lights now twisted around her, mixing with the wailing of the siren. She could hear someone calling her name, but wasn’t able to answer. She hurt all over.

A hand came to rest upon her shoulder.

Not him.

Where was he?

Her eyes fell shut. Memories slipped from her grasp.

Someone told her to hang on.

She saw the bright light everyone was so fond of.

She wasn't very fond of it.
