Synopsis:

Princess Princess is a short and sweet shoujo anime series that revolves around the lives of three boys who are forced to become "Princesses" at their all boys school, those who refuse will be flunked. The main protagonist, Tohru Kouno accepts the job as a princess for the privileges and monetary benefits, but what secret of his past is he hiding? Yujirou Shihoudani, another princess, becomes Tohru's close friend and also seems accepting of his role as a princess. The other princess is Mikoto, who consistently rebels against being a princess, but like the others he must continue or face being flunked.

Review:

Chances are if you gave this series a try, you are a fan of shonen ai or yaoi storylines. As I watched this series I was impressed early on that it was funny and interesting without hinting at a romance between any of the male characters, except in some images that appear within the closing credits of Tohru and Yujirou.

About halfway through the series this all changes, Tohru's past comes back to haunt him and Yujirou is there to help and support him and shows a lot of concern for Tohru, and Tohru ends up helping Yujirou with some of his family issues. These events leave the viewer wondering whether there will be a romance between Tohru and Yujirou or not. Though the series ends in a way that leaves this option open for the viewer it is certainly not as fufilling an ending as many would be anticipating.

The characters of the Princesses are fun, interesting, and all have some issue to overcome from family problems to romance, and their duties as princesses.

Overall, this show fufilled my expectations. I assumed the show would simply cover the experiences of these boys dressed like girls, but by incorporating their back stories and only a slight hint of romantic intrigue, it played with its premise and alternatly laughed at itself and created laughs for its audience. Showcasing with humor what happens when boys who look like girls go out looking for dates.

Princess Princess is a comedy shoujo series about three select boys at an all boys school who must become princesses and become friends. The characters and situations are funny. An anime for those out there that enjoyed "To Wong Foo: Thanks for Everything."
